My review on alienware

Thread Starter
Note this is not a thread intended to insult or offend anybody out there.

I have my Alienware-51 Desktop for well over two year, so my opinion of Alienware should be credible. Two years ago I was choosing between Dell, Voodoopc and Alienware. At the end I came down to Alienware, because the cool case and the excitement of owning an Alienware were very tempting. I ordered one on the month of october in 2002. It came quicker than I expected, right before halloween. The box was very appealing, because of the alienware logo. I opened the box and BAM my desktop was waiting for me to be explored. So I hooked up everything and plug in everything. Load and behold everything loaded. But one problem, I found out that the DVD drive wasn't working, because it didn't light up and the tray didnt slide out. As someone who has some knowledge of computers, I opened the case. Everything in there looks fine, except that the power cord wasn't plugged into the DVD drive. I don't understand why is that, because I thought they tested everything. Even in the binder they said DVD-ROM drive:Checked. I mean a customer shouldn't have to open their computer on the first day recieving their computer. I even call them and ask them why wasn't the power plugged in. The Rep responded with: "Sorry there could've been a mistake by one of our enginner". I don't know about you, I paid $2459 and they screwed up on such a fundamental thing. Anohter problem I encountered was that they didn't install many drivers. I had no audio and my ethernet card didn't work. I end up doing all that on my own. I didn't really get a chance to use the computer till the following day.

About 5-6 months later the power supply blew on me. It was a Enermax 460W, I don't know who to blame whether it was AW or Enermax. But that just gave me another aspect of AW.

I have to say their technical support is just horrible. 7/10 Rep doesn't speak english clearly, in fact they have no idea what they are doing. I know I said i recieve the computer for two years already, but even today their techincal support is very questionable.

So if you ask me whether or not I would buy an Alienware again, I would say no. They technical support is not worth it, and I question how much time they spend to test these machines. In the meantime I'm looking else where for anohter vendor for my laptop.

As I said earlier, this thread wasn't made to bash AW, but just an opinion of my experience with Alienware.

lol, well, 2 1/2 years ago, my Nova Yellow Area-51 arrived. Right off the bat, i noticed how bad the paint was, not only was the main part of the case not yellow, but the door was a completely different color. The yellow was a weird greenish-lime yellow, but I loved having my AW SO much, I didnt want to send it back. I had waited 2 months to get it, I wasnt going to send it back only to wait another period of time. Even after that, I praise AW to this day and its 3 AW's later...

Oh, I must add that when I called AW for support issues with my GFX card at 3 in the morning (yes, i said 3 in the morning) I did get a foreign guy who I could hardly understand, but he led me step by step in diagnosing the problem and was very helpful.

YOu should be sent back for ordering a yellow system. Red is better as is blue. But yellow? Did you need it to match your Teletubbie costume?

LOL!

I guess I am curious about a few things on your review of AW service. What did they do to fix your problem? Do you still have the problem? or did you self repair it.(Power Supply) You have owned this computer since 02' and these are the only problems you have had with it? I would like to know more about the history of the issues you had, and how they were resolved. Although it seems the first problem you had occurred over 2 years ago, since then have you had flawless operation?

I'm done with buying computers for a while, but I too think alienware systems are cool looking. However, if I sold this for 3 grand and decided to splurge, Id go Voodoo F:2, F:5, or just a RAGE SLI. It's all about the trust for me, not so much the quality as every company sends out bag eggs.

pluging a molex into a dvd-rom is:

1: a joke
2: irrevelant in overall satisfaction. I mean... yes it was loose... maybe it did loosen during shipping... so what? it's not like the heatsink was in the bottom of the case!!

I find it very weird that you can presume it's AW's fault that the Enermax PSU failed on you... it happens to everyone. It's not like all computer parts are tough to last 10 years... they'll break eventually and you were unlucky... forget the "who's fault it is?" mentality and live with it, everyone at some point with have a defective part in their systems.

all that sucks I agree... and I am sure that you had bad experiences with their CS... but let's be honest... those 2 problems can happen and are, in my opinion, irrelevants when talking about a company credibility and overall satisfaction. If you can't admit that it might not be their fault and that hardware failures and loose cable happens from time to time and it's not from the vendor's fault, that it just happens and you were the unlucky one, well you don't deserve to own a computer.

"If anything can go wrong, it will". Murphy's law is always right ^^

towards AW's CS... well that's something that happens too often and that we hear too much around here. But then, a lot of people says that they never had any problems with their CS even after 10-12 calls... no one's perfect and AW's CS is not the exception.

Sorry, Canadians are second-class citizens here (just slightly elevated above Frenchies). Go back to the corner.

who was the leading car manufacture 2 1/2 years ago? who is it now?

Point being things change. Companies can have lemons go out and can improve there customer satisfaction over time. Lets think they wouldnt be around this long if they sucked.

Im in customer service and from time to time people come through that work for us and piss off a customer or two. We get rid of them and try harder to get someone whos better for the job. I am not saying you have to like alienware but you cant go around forming an opinion on larger companies so easily.

Maybe if you bough three computers and had porblems with customer support over 6 or 7 year period your story would be a little more credible.

By the no offense just opinions here.

Ooooooooo Wally had to open his little casey and replace a moley cable and to top it all off his little juicey maker went kablooey. Damn lets all have a group huge here and go our merry ways.

Ok dude in all seriousness be happy Alienware doesn't discriminate according to IQ scores or else alot of retards would still be tinkering with their commodores and fingering their Apples.

Good computer maintenance requires the opening of cases and peekaboos to make sure your power supply is not pointing in the wrong direction and such. Oh and one little intsy bintsy thingy. ALIENWARE DOES NOT MAKE POWER SUPPLIES go whimper to the manufacturer.

My license plate frame (on my shopping cart) reads " Uber Geek Will code for Beer". My stuff is paid for, buddy. Now my beer, that is another story. And there is no shame living in a cardboard box.

hehehe back on topic, well if he trust Dell good for him but it's not like it would change anything... it's not like Dell were making better systems than AW. And god knows how many people had problems with their Dells, as with all other companies.
