Asus Z81k??

Thread Starter
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, especially Youhou for pointing out the ASUS z81k through rjtech.com. It has everything I was looking for ( and even a bit more ) and was close enough to my price range that I think I'm hooked...

Now.. Can anyone provide me with a review on one of these?

The setup I'm looking at is...

AMD Mobile Athlon 64 Processor 3400+
Operation System Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional (will be self installed)
Chipset nVidia Crush K8M
Main Memory DDR 333 SDRAM , 2x SO-DIMM socket 1024 MB
Display 15.4" WSXGA+ 1680x1200
Video Graphics & Memory ATI Mobility™ Radeon™ 9700, 128 VRAM
Hard Drive 60GB 7200rpm

etc, etc on the small stuff.....

Any known problems or things to look out for? And has anyone else dealt with rjtech.com? Any problems with them at all? If I get a laptop cooler, should I worry about having heat issues with a 7200rpm hdd? Thanks in advance for any information...

Wow... even cheaper there. And I've at least heard of geared2play.com before, so I think I'd probably be a little more comfortable ordering from them too. Only thing I don't understand is the difference between...

AMD Athlon-64 Mobile 3400+ 1MB cache Clawhammer 62W @245.00
and
AMD Athlon-64 Mobile 3400+ 1MB cache Clawhammer DTR @265.00

What's the difference?
The difference is the power consumption and thus battery life, where the Athlon 64 DTR 3400+ eats up 81.5W TDP and the Mobile Athlon 64 3400+ eats up 62W TDP. The Athlon 64 DTR is being phased out and replaced by the Mobile Athlon 64 instead.

Ok, now I'm confused... If the 62W is the better chip than the DTR, why is it less expensive? Is the DTR in some way more powerful? Or does it create less heat or something? Battery life will not be an issue with this laptop, as it will spend almost all of it's time plugged in, so I just want the better chip. Also, geared2play lists a 802.11b as the integrated wireless card. I haen't actually talked to anyone there yet, but if I can't get them to install a 802.11g card, is it possible to upgrade this once I get it? Or is it soldered to the mobo like so many other components of a laptop? Thanks again....

As I said the DTR is being phased out and that's why they're trying to price it out of the market. Performance wise they're identical with the same xxxx+ rating, and the Mobile produces less heat than the DTR.

OK, so maybe i'm missing something but can someone answer this for me. Both the Asus A2000k(a80k) and the A4000k(a81k) are listed on Asus's website as having only 64mb Vram via the Radeon 9700 card. When I see it for sale on the resellers' websites it is always listed as 128mb Vram. Can someone find out who is wrong or am I missing something? Thank you, Gary
post #9 of 37
edit: that was wrong. z81k has 64mb VRAM 9700 card
post #10 of 37
I just wanted to add the one from Geared2play also has 400 memory as opposed to 333, which I think I read is important with the 64.

I have been looking for a notebook as well and your other post is exactly what I was looking for as well (high res / amd 64 / radeon 9700 128).

Anyhow thanks for the question. It helped me out alot as well.
as far as i know, it only supports 333mhz anyway. they can put 400 in there, but it won't be running that fast.
I stand corrected. I didnt realize the Nvidia Crush K8m only supported 333.

This looks to be a very promising laptop. As of Sunday, Gear2Play had the Mobile Athlon64 3400+ 62w option, but now only lists the DTR options.

I am contacting them to find out why this option is not currently available on the Z81K.

Is it worth it to get the 9700 though?...I know it has 128 of memory but still, it's already a couple of generations old...argh...

If you want a laptop now and really can't wait, your only options are the 9700 128/256 or the GO 6800 256.

I still think for the money, this laptop is a very good buy. I'm just waiting for more reviews, to see what issues people have after extended use.

Here is the response I got from there sales dept:
--------------------------------------------------------
Pulled from inventory. No longer available. The dtr is more powefull and just drains a little more battery. Either way you are looking at about 2 hours of battery life tops. Not much to work with but thats typical for dtr's
--------------------------------------------------------

Strange, I thought the DTRs where being replaced.

ack, this is getting more frustrating...the Z81K isn't on Asus' North American website -http://usa.asus.com/products/notebook/nbindex.htm

...so right now I can't get exact specs for it...I'm wondering if you could order it as a whitebook and just order a Mobile AMD64 3400+ on your own -http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...103-477&depa=1...I assume it's socket 754 but that's a pretty big assumption to be wrong about...and that's annoying about the DDR400, why put it in if it's not supported?
The Z81k Isn't on the Asus North America site. I haven't gotten answer from them whether or not this is a laptop available only to other countries and some vendors local around here in US import them to sell or it is a new laptop they haven't update the website yet.

However, what is known about this laptop is that it replaces the Z80k which is the 15" version, while this one is the 15.4" version.

Any other spec is unknown as it is fairly new.

Hmm are you sure? I thought I saw somewhere the video card was 128MB on this particular model. At least that is what got me to look at it vs their M6BNe version
