Hi, I'm looking for GPS receiver so I can use it for navigation in car.
Is there any suggestions ? I need suggestion based on the hardware and also the software.
one of my choice is garmin GPS 18, or Copilot live.

what about bluetooth GPS receiver? anyone know which one is the best?

Thank you

you can use a bluetooth gps receiver or a compact flash gps receiver

pros of BT: wireless, can be placed anywhere within BT distance of lappy, interchangable with pdas powered by BT
cons of BT: uses own power supply, needs to recharge if battery runs out, and BT sync can be lost

pros of CF: sits straight in your pcmcia slot so long as you have a CF pcmcia adapter, uses laptops power, interchangable with pdas powered by a cf slot.
cons of CF: requires cf pcmcia adapter

i use a CF gps receiver on my pda (ipaq 2210) and destinator 3 software

dont use the laptop as a gps sat navigator as its too bulky to have in the car...(asus m6n 15.4" widescreen)..and having the pda sit on the dashboard/windshield is more convenient for me

Any info on this subject would be a big help to me as well...I know DeLorme and Microsoft both publish suites that come with mapping software and a gps receiver (DeLorme: http://www.delorme.com/gps.htm Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/PRODUCTS/in...7aa1a&type=ovr) but I can't see using them in the car due to the reasons Pogi pointed out... Does the Microsoft Streets & Trips integrate well with Office (meaning is it easy to transfer data between the two, thereby making the user more productive)? The Garmin GPS 18 appears to be very similar to these products, just with their own software included...

What about the Garmin StreetPilot 2660 or the Garmin Quest?...they're stand alone units that would be easy to use in the car, but I believe they can also be hooked up to a notebook...

you can grab any CF GPS receiver hardware...i dont recommend ebay as some of the ones they sell on there are buggy..my fren bought one and it causes his pda to freeze when its inserted

i have a leadtek cf gps receiver

the software that you are looking for, is it for pc or for windows mobile 2003 (pda)?

i use destinator 3 for the pda..dont have any working FREE gps car nav software for the pc

destinator 3 is great..automatically reroutes..a womans voice...has everything i need..

Does it have any differences between CF GPS receiver with Bluetooth or USB interface?
I am kind of undecided which one should I get.
I have a laptop now but does not have Bluetooth adapter card.
I am also considering between using GPS with laptop or with PDA.
Please let me know the advantage and drawback of the 2.
what about the software itself.
is there any differences advantages and disadvantage of the map software.

sorry for this late reply

there are slight differences between the three..such things are how quickly it can connect to satellites..wireless...additional batteries..multiple devices..etc

as i stated earlier..unless you want to get your laptop installed in the front passenger seat...or you have a very wide dashboard..using a laptop as a sat nav sys is not advisable..its just far too big to use in a car..and plus its best for it to be situated at the windshield, near the dashboard so you can quickly glance at it if needed be..and entering addresses wont take your eye off the road for too long..even if youre at a dead stop..laptops are great tho because they have a big and clear screen..much better quality than the screens of pdas

pdas are much more mobile..and convenient..and cost far less than a laptop...you can take it out of the car..use it when hiking..and it sits perfectly on your windshield/dashboard...it can however have problems...but this is in the software side

map software can vary..there are many different gps software available...so its really up to you...

best to google or goto gps passion for more information

I have the garmin V and I love it. The only negative thing I could say about it is that when you purchase it you only get to pick one geographic area. Which means you can only have one section of the United States that is very detailed like side roads etc. If anyone has any questions reguarding the Garmin V just ask.

You will find out that there are a lot available for either PDAs or Laptops. For softwares the i.guidance Navigation and the very affordable microsfot street map (although this one has no voice) are highly recommended.

For hardware, try to find one with the latest technology (SiRFIII). I am still researching myself, but you can join this forum to learn more for different maps, hardwares, or even the stand alones:

go with a bluetooth, its MUCH more convinient since any pda with bluetooth can latch on as well. i have the BT-308 bluetooth gps reciever off ebay, its the same one dell and hp use. it lasts more than a day on battery and it comes with a car and home charger. its super easy to use, its wireless!!!!!!!! highly recommended
