Gateway 7405GX benchmarks

hello,
I am looking for new laptop. One of the choices I consider is Gateway 7405GX.

here is some tests I performed on one of display models in Best Buy:

software: FreshDiagnose, v 6.60 (I added comparison with Sharp Actius RD10 -software- FreshDiagnose v 6.90)

CPU bench results:

WheatStone FPU 6,334 MWIPS // 3,258
DhryStone ALU 8,624 MDIPS // 6,356
Speed 2004 MHz // 2792

Memory bench results:
Integer Assigment 15,383 //12,510
Real Assigment 15,295 // 12,831
Integer Split 53,556 // 18,892
Real Split 65,914 // 18,554

Hard disk bench result:

Write speed average 13.32 MB/s // 6.83 (!!! I am astonished! so slow!)
read speed average 14.43 MB/s //6.86

cpu multimedia bench result
benchmark index 3,460 //2,244

as you can see Sharp is a big time looser. Even it has 5400 Rpm hard drive and intel pentium 4 processor... it seems Gateway is ahead...

sorry, just checked, sharp actius rd10 has 4200 rpm hard drive, it is hitachi travelstar model dk23ea-60.

very slow...

4200rpms are stone age. I wish they offered 15k or 30k then we would really see performance. A little noise will never hurt.

couldn't resist... yesterday bought 7405GX. well it going to ship from other store, because it seems it is discontinued... sorry folks, I guess that is it- no more new, 7405 gx available, at least not in best buy. and emachines, gateway seems don't make any similar laptops. emachines seems dead, and gateway stuck with intel processors... man, AMD 64 processors rocks and intel is far begind... it is sad that not some many make laptops with AMD processors..

Compman55,
nice website, i definetelly will use your guide when i will get my laptop, by the way, can you make similar guide how to change hard drive? i would like to upgrade to faster one. do you see any battery life decrease with faster hard drive?

can you suggest any good brand memory? (can't pay half price of laptop , so with moderate price, please).

thanks, will post images once i will get my laptop.

by the way, service plan in bestbuy for laptops is available ONLY at the time of purchase, on the same ticket and yes, bestbuy do replace battery every year.

no more 7405s? thats bulls**t!

why is gateway sucking up to intel anyway. damn, looks like its only compaq/hp who's seriously getting into amd64 notebooks...and a lot of fringe gaming notebook manufacturers like ibuypower. (i hate the fact that all of compaq/hp's amd64s have a geforce 4 go video card, damn intel "extreme" wouldve been better)

i have a pet theory about why so many manufacturers dropped amd64 notebooks from their lists: see, intel forced them to make their product line "intel only" if they wanted centrino processors really cheap (in bulk). u gotta admit, intel has a winner with the centrino so thats the way all the manufacturers are going now.

hopefully someone will see some sense in this mess and we can have lots of 1200 - 1500 $ a64s with lots of rebates coming soon

yup, that is true, i have even a link to gateway 7405GX. two days ago it still worked, now it say that it doesn't exist:

to bestbuy 7405gx

i hate centrinos- teeny processor laptops- can't do a lot of with them... ok, might be they have longer battery life, might be they can work wirelesly, what so ever, but so what? for any serious work they are wortless.

to charge for centrino additional 500 $ is more than absurd...

compaq/hp laptops suck. i made comparison tests and compaq were all loosers, compared with e-machines/arima/gateway 64 proc.
+ with compaq you get very uncomfortable touch pad, which even refused to work all the time, also keyboard isn't so good.

hp laptops are too heavy. they are too thick as for laptop.

arima/emachines/gateway with 64 amd rock!!!

Batjanas,

No need for guide for changing the hard drive. It is so simple a 5yr old could do it. Underneath the touchpad on the bottom of the laptop there is a panel with 1 scew in it. Remove screw and pull out panel, this is the caddy that the hard drive is mounted to, so both the hard drive and caddy will come out as one.

thanks,
i was just looking into a gateway laptop picture and thought that hard drive is not removable without removing main bottom panel. on my sharp upgrading hard drive is easy- sharp even designed laptop that someone could upgrade latter.

voodoo, allienware and some others are quite overpriced, sager is basicly available only online, and without credit card it is not pessible to buy it...

finally got mine today. using snorre's technique to charge battery.
as of so far i can tell that there is no dead pixels on a screen, which is good.
bad thing is that a big part of hard disk space is concumed by recovery software- you get only 70 gigs even it say you have 80 gigs... uninstalled Aol right away. gatewayemachines seems like to put this shit on their computers. also uninstalled norton antivirus. i think i will get rid of some over stuff prebundled with my computer, because it just eat up my hard drive space.

i will post some pictures when i will be done charging my lappy

bastards... THATS THE WAY TO LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

well all i lost- more memory... now I will have to upgrade it ... still i don't understand why in best buy salespeople do not inform you that they have something new coming instead of discontinued models... the same i can say about gateway- at least in the main page i couldn't find any 64 proc laptops...

still my new lappy rocks.

Remember that we are talking about mobile hard drives and not stationary ones. With plates turning so fast, the the hard drive could just break due to the gyroscopic effect.

I use a 80 GB 4200 rpm hard drive and I am quite satisfied with it by the way.

Most Best Buys apparently didn't even know about the 7422 replacing the 7405, from what I've read and heard on various fora. Gateway seems to have rolled this one out silently.
They were not very happy at best buy when I swapped my unopened 7405GX for the 7422GX. They didn't have the new ones on display, but there were 4 in the cage up above the display shelves.

yah, these news quite late though. if i new anything about 7422GX i didn't opened box too... well i am still quite happy with 7405GX. seems it is running ok so far... and besides- laptops changes so fast, that even 7422GX will be history quite soon anyway.

bestbuy suck. they offered me to join reward zone or what so ever, and you have to pay for one year membership 10 bucks and wait 4-6 weeks untill you get gift cards and for new 7405gx i was able to get just 40 or so bucks. well do the math- you get just 30 dollars back in gift cards... which suck anyway...

Sound and modem drivers

I got my Gateway 7422GX last week and already repartitioned the whole hard drive to install Windows Professional. I didn't do the back up like Gateway asked.

Is there anyone who hasn't formattted this thing can tell me what type of modem and sound devices it uses? Go to Control Panel - System - Hardware [tab] - Device Manager

7422GX is almost identical to the 7405 as well, so if you got one of those, please help me!

Also notice that if you reinstall Windows from scratch that you'd have to manually install all drivers back. Display is ATI Radeon 9600 and wireless adapter is Broadcom a/b/g.

Thanks in advance.

The wireless is b/g, not a/b/g
