Samsung Electronics announced Thursday that from Jan. 1, customers who discover defective pixels on an LCD monitor produced by the company less than six months after its purchase may have the panel replaced free of charge.

An LCD monitor is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny pixels. Manufacturers have classified products with 10 or less defective pixels as "normal" and refused to repair or exchange them, which led to complaints from customers. Samsung added, however, that the free exchanges do not apply to customers who purchased their LCD monitors before Jan. 1.

sweet! i can finaly buy an LCD for my desky and don't worry it will arrive in the same condition as my lappy did (1 dead pixel)
wait does it include if my ibm has a samsung lcd? then w00t!
nah, they'll just take the defective desktop LCDs and throw them in the laptop pile

Is this guarantee local (Korean) or world-wide?
It's about time. People shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars for defects and then be told those defects are within specification.

According to this article the guarantee will at least initially only be available in South Korea, they haven't decided yet whether to offer it wotld-wide...

i agree. Although if ur buying from a store such as bestbuy and circuit city, theyll let you exchange the product if you want. my uncle bought laptop one time from bestbuy and it had a dead pixel. he took it back and told them he wanted a different with no dead pixels. they took it back with no problems but he coulda just been lan easy sales rep.

I agree as well. Defects should not be a "specification". New cars aren't sold with paint chips or windsheild cracks, so then why are LCDs sold with dead pixels?

Because not even the manufacturers know about them... it's a limit of LCD technology. Producing many LCD screens at a time... there are bound to be some pixels that go wrong.
Compared to 5 years ago... the dead pixel count has gone way way down... we just have to live with them until LCD production technology can improve.

Woo hoo, someone has finally made the right decision.

This definitely swings my choice towards Samsung when I finally replace my desktop display.

Did you have the extended warranty? I have seen people, even after purchasing the 4 yr warranty, have trouble getting a replacement for an LCD or laptop with even one dead pixel.

well if y ucan return anytime in 30 days.. whats hte problem? lol obviously they'd rather exchange
post #14 of 18

LOL, are you people aware that this only applies to S. Korea (at least initially)?

Subsequently, all defect monitors returned in S. Korea will be deemed perfectly acceptable for sale to customers in the rest of the world, meaning that there will be an increase of dead pixel panels for you to buy while perfect-pixel panels will be primarily destined for the S.Korean market

Simply put, unless such a policy is made worldwide it only puts everyone not affected by it at a disadvantage...

not really.. samsung will see their sales go up and returns go down (guarantee mean it is unlikely they will even sell defective pixle monitors) then the next thing you know they apply their quality assurance proceedures globally.. and the other manus will ahve to scramble to catch up +)
