What is AS5?

I have read in quite a few threads here about AS5 and once it kicks in stable temperatures are found. What is AS5 and do we have to enable it or does it get automatically enabled. I think Computer potato or SYnergy said it kicks in after 72 hours. Does it mean, that the laptop has to be on for 72 hours so that AS5 kicks in?

9860 is a kick-ass machine. Eats up HL2. But had some problems playing CS-Source with internal wireless got only about 30fps. I guess its coz of the internal wireless. Should play with lan and see how it is. UT2k4 is superb. Am going to buy Doom3 and EQ2 to really stress the machine.

Luv the DJ. Luv everything about the machine except the TV Tuner. I have no clue how to connect it. So if someone succeeded please leave detailed instructions.

PS: Sorry for posting it here. Can a mod move this thread to the General area? Thanks in advance.

AS5 is a thermal paste used to absorb heat generated by computer chip. Follow this link:

I have not experienced any slow down with my wireless hook up. It has been flawless so far. What kind of router you have? Try Linksys WRT50G model. It's easy to set up and works like a charm. Slowdown could also be caused by too many people on the server. Try one with lower ping

Hey NewAlien

AS5 is a paste, gel, goo compound that gets applied to the heat sink that sits atop your cpu. What it does is fills in the microscopic gaps between the sink and cpu. If those gaps remain unfilled the machine runs a lot hotter because the air in those gaps acts as an insulator for the heat. Once the gaps are filled the heat transfers much better to the sinks thus a cooler machine. The reason it takes 3-4 days of solid use is the compound has to temper to the machine. That basicly is the goo getting hot and filling the gaps even better. It never really gets hot enough to cause run off but hot enough to "settle in".

Sorry no tv tuner

Cheers and merry new year

Thanks guys for clarifying what AS5. I am using NETGEAR 54g router. My internal wireless is not turbo but I think it is coz of the high ping coz I was having 141 ping. I will know more after playing for a while.
