video chip overheating?

Thread Starter
for the past 2 months or so when i play 3d games, my 5660 gets very hot. nothing surprising here. but when it gets really hot, i start getting flickering colors and artifacts in my games. i've seen this with every game i have that uses opengl or d3d. usually with games that are more graphics intensive (splinter cell, unreal 2), the artifacting starts sooner than with older games (quake 3, counter strike).

has anyone else had these problems?

i've tried various things to correct this problem, from updating directx (big mistake), updating the video drivers, even a clean install of winxp with default sager drivers still doesn't fix the problem.

this only started in the summer time, so i'm hoping it goes away when the weather cools off, but if not, is there anything i can do? i'd hate to send my laptop back to sager, as i currently live in japan and the shipping would be outrageous.

It sounds like it must be the GPU having issues. Contact Sager to see if there's something they may want you to try as a last chance of not having to send it in.

Almost the same prob.

I had my 5660 since Feb. this year. I've been noticing lately that some of my games starts lagging(fps drop), lasting from a couple of secs, to minutes, an then returns to normal. I get this on pretty much every game I tried so far and I'm concerned that it might be the video chip too. (Also tried reinstalling Win XP, DX, and video drivers.) Any suggestions?(Does the warranty cover this just in case it comes to that?)

That kind of sounds like the problem I had with my 5620.

It has the ATI m7 64mb card in it. When I played games (or other CPU intense things 90-100%) I'd lose fps from 125 in quake3 to 10 and it would 'lag' (but not packetloss related).

I ran perfmon during quake3 and noticed that suddenly instead of 90% CPU dedicated to Q3, it fluctuated between as low as 40 to 85 percent. The other process that took up the rest of the percentage was SYSTEM :/

So it just did that under XP, XPpro, win2K and all vid drivers updates etc :/. So I guess it was a hardware problem but since I do not live in the states and did not wanna part with my precious, I in my rage about it just lifted the laptop and shook it like hell. Apparently that fixed it

It still does it sometimes but only like once every 4 months for 3-5min just when I am about the cap the flag in our playoff Q3 matches
