Greetings everyone. Quick question, M6811 or 7405GX

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, but have been lurking for a few weeks. I'm currently thinking about purchasing a laptop, and have been doing a lot of searching around for the best deals and such. What I've found is the Gateway 7405GX and the Emachines M6811, both are available at my local Bestbuy, and I'm wondering which I should get. I've looked over the specs numerous times, and I know that they're almost the exact same machine, only different names. The only other differences I can see between them is the Ultrabright screen on the Gateway, and the Athlon64 3400+ on the Emachines. Is there any other difference between the two? I won't be buying one just yet, I still need to work up the money, but those are the best I'm seeing in my price range.

Also have the hinge cracks proven any real problem, or are they mearly cosmetic?

One more thing. Are these things really for real? I mean an Athlon64 and all that other good stuff for $1200-$1500? That's an incredible bargain. For a so-called "value" laptop those are some really high specs.

So which one, Gateway or Emachines?

Thanks in advance.

Which do you like better, glossy screen or matte? That is what you should go on. Also emachines lets you extend the factory warrenty for 159 for two extra years, whereas gateway does not.

Well, I did like the Gateway's screen much better. It seemed to me while comparing the two side by side, that the screen on the 7405GX was more vivid. That might be due to the glossy but I'm not sure. Also do laptops more often than not have dead pixels on screen or not? It's not a big deal to me I just don't know these things before hand, as this will be my first laptop purchase. Also are the DVD burners the same? I've heard some say that the Gateway is 8x while the Emachines is 4x. Can anyone confirm or correct this? I just don't want to make a purchase than find something different.

Man, buying a laptop isn't easy.

Thanks for the reply Compman55.

well, for at a total of 1649 (1249+250warentee+150 tax)out the door you can get the gateway with the 3 year BB warantee, which is a pretty good warentee to have. I have had no problems with our BB here in OKC for servicing, I purchased mine in october, it was also produced/built in october. I have had no cracked hinges, my first laptop did have a 2 dead pixels, they were both white, one was off dead center and one was lower left. I brought it back the next day, explained I had just purchased it the day before and they just replaced it on the spot.
I don't think youll notice the 200 MHz difference, and if you want to down the road you can always upgrade the CPU, I prefer the glossy screen also not sure if the 6811 is a WXGA or not. but I know that that isn't a cost effective upgrade down the road.
the dvd burner is 8X write, but no one here has gotten a disk to write faster that 4x, I think we just need to find the right disk.

Thanks for the info. The Gateway is looking really appealing for me. I'm actually having a job interview at Best Buy tomorrow, because I'm currently out of work looking for more. So if I could get on there, with an employee discount that would make it all the sweeter.

The LCD is definately what you want to base your selection on. The other two differences are much cheaper ot change later if you want to than the LCD. I personally prefer matte, but I use mine in the sun some and with bright overhead lights a good bit. Glossy screens are not good for those purposes. Besides that, the bright screen does give the illusion of a sharper, brighter, cleaner image in normal circumstances (typical house lighting).

There are 2 more little differences between the emachines and gateway. The all silver lid on the gateway (just looks better imho) and the supposed boosted up wireless ( I dont think anyone has gotten it to work at boosted speed yet tho).

Thunder is right on with the screen. I had a m6805 for home only use and the gateway screen seems so much better.

I can also agree with Mr. Anderson on dvd burn speed, 4x no matter what discs I try. There is also no firmware upgrade available yet for the burner which might solve that problem but I am sure there will be eventually.

I bought a M6811 and I'm waiting to receive it this week.

I hope I'll be happy with the matte screen !
Is it a decent screen ?
Is there a really big noticeable difference that could potentially make me think that I should've bought the GateWay 7405GX ?
I'm working with lots of texts and diagram. Is a matte screen easier on the eyes because it has less reflection ? For example I often work in a class inside a school and at home...

haaaa, I hope I'll be happy with the lcd screen even if it's not "UltraBright"...

I own both and I will say they are both great, however for indoors I personally like the glossy. The matte does not block the brightness, but it is not quite as clear.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's appearing that the Gateway would be best for my current needs. Has anyone experienced the hinge cracks on more recent laptop purchases, or have they pretty much been taken care of now?
