Check out the dvdrhelp site, it has tons of info. Here's a link to the section you want. http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=8#8

Also, your camcorder almost certainly has a built in analog to digital converter which means you can use it to import video to your computer (thru firewire), if you want to record TV shows, home movies, etc.

Just use Windows Movie Maker...and if that doesn't meet your needs pick up Pinnacle Studio from Best Buy or something...

It simply does not apply to this thread.....

Pinnacle Studio is probably the easiest to get to grips with quickly, although Sony VideoStudio is more flexible.

The good thing about Windows Movie Maker is that it is free. The problem I had last time I gave it a real try is that it kept crashing, losing lots of work. This may have been fixed.

Adobe Premiere Elements

Adobe recently released Premiere elements ($99). I use the full version and love it, the elements version is reported to be nearly as powerful.

Also, Pinnacle studio version 9 is leaps and bounds above version 8. Version 9 supports such high end features as picture-in-picture and "green screen" editing. It is also around $99.

software

I started with unlead and was going to move to pinnacle but got scared off by horror stories of multiple crashing form web

unlead 7 basice se was ok sort of, but that version i got did not have the mpeg2 encoder, which kind of defeats the purpose

After scouring the digital camera forums I saw that sony software was consistently rated highly

sony vegas is expensive and Very powerful

i bought sony moviemake and can recommend it:

Very good interface, it prompts and walks you through steps, powerfull with very good encoding

fairlry cheap too at around $99us

google it and you can download it from the web

Or download Avid Free DV and learn a real editing product.

Or do the ole' eBay for Premiere 6.0 or 6.5. Should be able to snag one of those for $80 US.

if you want to just edit rather than mess around with stuff that doesn't work then go with a Canopus product - I have used the old 'Raptor' for years and more recently their 'Let's Edit' software - it's very capable and yet is easy to learn/use.

Avid Free DV.

Since it's already there, why not use Movie Maker 2? Once you outgrow it, then you can go spend money. There's a pretty good online community to help you get the most out of it. I find it does pretty much what I want to my home movies, though I did buy the combo Adobe Premiere Elements/Photoshop Elements for $80 AR. However, I haven't gotten into Premiere Elements yet. It's just so easy to quickly whip out a movie with Movie Maker2.

I was about to download it but the system requirement is 1 GB of RAM. Wow!
