Hard drive noise? (probably parking, but)

I'm having an issue which I think might be the 'head parking' feature of our XPS's notebook drives, but I'm not sure. I'll be playing World of Warcraft for example, and the game will just stop moving for a second, and the hard drive makes the 'thunk' noise. It happens every so often, and not all the time, but it happens regardless. (this is the 5400rpm 80gig drive). Should I be worried that this is a problem with the drive and *not* the parking feature? Or should I just get out a spirit level and make sure the laptop is level? Thanks!

Mine has never done THAT! I would get that sh!t checked out. It couldn't hurt.

This "parking" feature should only occur when the laptop is almost idle, not while playing games. And it's just a faint clicking sound, not a "thunk". Thunk= bad.

I experience the same thing you do, but I don't game. Every once in a while the computer will freeze for a split second, the HD will thunk and then everything is good and normal again. I think it is normal.

I had my XPS up on a cooling pad at an angle, and after lowering the feet, the HD no longer parks. Oh well, gotta give up a few degress for less noise. :0) Thanks for the posts!

Ive had it since day one. Its supposed to do this. Do a search. Its a safety feature as it is locking the hard drive in place. There is a bios flash to help it out but it didn't work for me. i also play wow and it does this about every 10- 20 of play. I hate it but I'm gonna get a new drive soon anyhow.
