9200 Screen brightness very poor!

I have just received my Dell 9200 and while I am very happy with the construction and performance, I am quite disappointed with the screen brightness. I didn't get the UXGA due to all the sparkle probs people have mentioned so opted instead for the standard XGA.

Even with the brightness turned up to max the 17" display is still very dim compared to most other laptops out there. This is while plugged in with AC as well. If compared with the trubrite screens the differences are even bigger.
Strangely enough I think I can also see the sparkle problem even on this screen despite people saying its only a problem on the UXGA not the standard.

Anyone else find this problem too? It's quite dissappointing that such a fine laptop comes with this problematic screen. I am starting to contemplate returning it for a refund...a real shame as I love the rest of the laptop

what is this sparkle problem you mention?

Sounds like you may have received an LG Philips WXGA+ panel. What part number does your packing list indicate for the LCD?

The LCD's part number according to my invoice list is W5411 which from what I've read in another thread here is the samsung panel and apparently everyone loves it.

It is very obvious that a single lamp isn't adequate for a panel of this size. You can almost see the edges being a little dimmer than the center of the panel. Despite turning up the brightness to max it's still pretty dull.

My old Sony Vaio (3yrs old) has a considerably brighter screen.

Well, maybe you'll find some consolation in the fact that the WUXGA is even dimmer. My wife has the W5411, and it's about two settings brighter than the WUXGA, and brighter than the 15.4" WSXGA+ on the 8600. I've seen Sony's panels, and the Sony is about the brightest thing you can get, but the 9200 WXGA+ seems perfectly fine for a panel with anti-glare coating (vs the Sony's higher-transmittance reflective coating).

get ready for hell if you try to return it, will take a month to see your money if ever! haha

i always use the lowest possible brightness on my laptop. hurts the eyes as well as weirs it off when working more then 4 hours.

Unless the clariness is weak then ok but i wouldnt be bothered if brightness is not that high.

wow, i'm surpised that you got a samsung screen and had those problems... I have that exact screen and its perfect. I returned my two replacement laptops because the screen that I had was too dark and it sparkled; both of them were LG panels though... That's kinda strange that you got a samsung... are you sure its not an LG?

Yeah W5411 is the panel I have according to the part numbers on my invoice list although I haven't visually verified this with my hardware (at work at the moment).

I am positive though that I see the sparkle effect even on the XGA+. You can see these miniature sparkles throughout which appear to be a result of the antiglare coating. It's especially obvious on white backgrounds.

I suppose I can live with it but with so many laptops having excellent bright screens around at the moment it may make this laptop hard to sell down the road when I plan to sell it in 12 mths.

I got my 9200 a couple of weeks ago and mine seem fine.. At 1st I was a little concerned but after tweaking the settings it looks good now... Not sure if you have already to be sure to use the "ClearType" setting. Not sure why it isn't set as default but mine wasn't. I noticed a big difference in the display and it makes reading a lot easier on the eyes... Here's what PC Mag says in their article:
Laptop screens are usually easier on the eyes than the oh-so-subtly flickering CRTs. Even at high resolutions, however, fonts on LCDs can look a little jaggy around the edges. To clear them up with ClearType, right-click on your desktop and select Properties. Hit the Effects button on the Appearance tab and select ClearType under Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts. While you're there, click on Use large icons, too, if you have a high-resolution display. And for best overall display results, always use your display's native resolution.

Hope that helps and it seem to work for me....

I find clear type is not that good for the eyes. You can try to tweak the clear type setting by downloading a program from microsoft website (search for clear type). YOu will have better control over the default setting.

any of you guys with the wuxga display from the uk??

Have to say my wxga 9200 is definately not dim. The only time I've ever wanted it any brighter at all was with direct sunlight shining on the panel. Used it to watch movies on a road trip last week, no complaints from people sitting in the row behind about not being able to see it well, though slightly louder speakers would have been nice as it was not the quietest ride (suv @75-80mph gets some road noise).
