NEW GATEWAY OUT 1/9/05 *7422gx* please sticky

So as some of you may know I work at best buy and there are ways to see new units before gateway announces them, as they must be in our system before we can receive them. So anyways on 1/9/05 the new gateways will be arriving, as many of you may have seen the 7405gx are clearnced out and the 7422gx is the next in line. This model has much dissappoitment to it though.

The site with the PDF spec sheet is down at the moment and I forgot to grab the paper I printed up with the sku on it from work tonight, I will get this tommarrow, I promise.

The specs are as follows.
A64 3400+
1024MB ram
80gig hd
8x dvd burner
ATI 9550 Mobile
15.4 Xbrite screen

thats pretty much it, if any question please feel free to ask.

ATI Mobility Radeon 9550? I wasn't aware that such a card existed on the laptop platforms. I thought it went from Mobility Radeon 9000 to 9200, to 9600 to 9700. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't make sense. Why put a weaker card in a newer laptop that's replacing their top end model?

I don't make the decissions, but my guess is to offset the cost of the ram was to lower the video card. The laptop still retails for 1399.99 so they had to take the cost out somewhere.

ATI may be making a new low cost mobile GPU, and labeling it the 9550. The desktop 9550s were just rebranded 9600s which ran at lower clock speeds (maybe a few subtle differences too). I did notice there's no mention of how much video memory there will be, or if the memory was discrete or shared. Gateway will have screwed up royally if they dropped it down to 32 MB of shared graphics memory.

EDIT: Something interesting here. Has anyone heard anything about these models from Arima:

M622-DK8X/UK8X
W622-DK8X/UK8X

They both have unrecognizable GPUs (ATI M24CSP64 and M22P/M24P/M26P, respectively), although in the W model, it states there is 64/128 MB of memory. The good news is latter notebook supports PC3200 RAM. One of these could be the template behind the new Gateway 7422GX.

I noticed on the spec sheet its says 512 DDR ram but then on the main specs does say 1024 DDR ram.. and it says GZ and GX. The 9550 might be a typo. Uh.. if there really is a gig a ram and the 9550 is a typo I might have to think of an excuse to return my 7405gx (i should of just went with the ferrari, lol) That means that theres 512mb under the keyboard. Maybe Anaconda can confirm the specs.

Ahh, nevermind:

ATI M22(P) is the Mobility Radeon X300
ATI M24(P) is the Mobility Radeon X600
ATI M26(P) is the Mobility Radeon X800

Okay, our sheet from through BB states that it is 1gig of ram, it is a 64mb 9550. These are usually not wrong.

clearance???? what does that mean for us 7405gx buyers? i just bought mine this weekend. does best buy have any kind of price protection for a month???? i am kind of pissed if this is so, i would have waited to get the newer model! i could have lived with a worse video card to trade off more ram.......

eh, I don't care. I love my 7405gx and wouldn't trade it for the world!

The Radeon is 64MB dedicated. Seems to be the same W730-K8 used so far so everything else should be the same.

Tis the nature of the beast.........one could sit around waiting forever for PC tech to stop evolving.
I must admit my surprise though that BB is replacing the 7405GX so soon.
I'll have to search threads here, but didnt 7405GX hit BB in july/'04?

Anyway thill, you still made an excellent choice

Anyone have more info on this ATI 9550 GPU?
So the 7405 was on bestbuy.com this morning, and now it doesn't exist. Are they officially gone? If I can't find one anywhere, perhaps I could take a 7405 off someone's hands if they're eyeing the 7422?

certainly, that is true, but i bought it like 2 months after it came out! i figured i was good for 6 months to a year, not just one month!!!!!

gosh, this really burns me. any BB employees know if i have any recourse to get the newer machine one week after i got the old one???

That PDF says something about 8.5 GB DVD-R's, does that mean that this laptop comes with a dual layer burner? That would be frickin awesome.

Also if the Mobility Radeon 9550 is a lower clocked version of the 9600, wouldn't that thearetically mean that you could overclock the GPU to 9600 speeds with little impact on heat?
