I purchased mine Thursday evening.

I have not had a chance to run it through it's paces as of yet, but happy with it so far.

The local BB did not have it in stock when I called, and I actually found out about it via BB's website. The next closest store, which is an hour away had some, and the local one received their shipment of seven units one hour after I had purchased it.

I was called and told that it was ready for pick up and headed back to get it. Between it and another system I was trying to finish for a client I was up until two Friday morning.

In about ten days I will have the time to load XP Pro, and am wondering if there is anything, beyond video drivers, I really need to be aware of.

Question- is it very hard to swap the hd for a new one (I do not work on laptops)?

Oh, and Gateway was more than useless in help the first time I tried to register my laptop, as the 7422GX is not one of the notebook choices. When I called the toll-free number to aks where to register it, Dan CA1264 told me I had to call the toll number to find out. I did not ask for tech support, just where on the website to register it. When I called Utah, they were aplogetic about not being able to register it, but were also adamant that I had to restore the entire system to use Money2K4 when I asked about ti. After spending a total of seven hours loading MS Office 2K3 and all other applications I need, I told them that I could do without it. The tech support folks said that this had been a managment decision and not tech supports to do it this way.

I will load some imaging software later today to create another set of images an diwll try out the buring at 8X for the DVD's and post my results.

Same Arima case design as previous model. Nice design, but it is getting kind of old and tired.

Video card shows up as ATI 9600/9700 in control panel. Either ATI has no updated drivers, or the spec sheet is wrong.

Comes with SP2 pre-installed.

All of Gateway's and E-Machine's newer desktops and laptops have now gone to the "MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN RESTORE CD" model, just like HP, Compaq, and Sony. Except Gateway actually includes blank CD's in the package for this purpose, and the reminder comes up every boot, unless you tell it not to. Gateway's reminder gets your attention better than the others. So that is one good thing.

I still feel this is very cheap. Pressed Restore CD's should be included. The shelf life of CD-R's can be pretty unpredictable.

The surface area below and around the keyboard feels a little cheaper and a little more flimsy than previous models. This is from memory and I may be wrong.

Also, they seem to be using a different power adapter, but I have not confirmed this yet.
I guess my local store is slow. I bought my 7405gx on Christmas Eve and clicking the weird text worked, brought the desktop right up. Oh well, typical of stores around here...always a little slow to catch up

I can't believe they make you make your own restore CDs. Why? I don't understand. They go through all the effort of giving you blank CDs, putting software on the computer that tells you to make them...why? I reformat all my systems and use Norton Ghost regardless, lol.

What do you mean that CDr shelf life can be unpredictable? I was under the impression they'd last like 10 years if you kept them in a case and out of the sun. I hope its not unpredictable, I do all my backups on CDr and DVDr discs!

7422 GX now at $1249 at bestbuy

was wondering ..(compared to 7405 GX)
1)did they improve the sound quality of speakers...or upgraded the drivers/speakers

2)anyone with hinge cracking with this model - 7422GX.
if the hinge was so delicate design...will it withstand(if not cracking now)...daily opening-closing of lid 10 times a day/for 2 yrs.

Are they comming out with improvements on 7410 GX ...without the dvd writer..some people dont want to give extra 200 buvks for dvd writer on latop
as it is....
1)avalable for $50 on deals externally
2)DVD technology may not live long as Blue ray or hd-dvd might come soon on laptops...making yr extra 200 bucks useless.

Yea, I saw it today too for 1249$ and got it. My question after reading all of these posts is this:

Since I use this for Pro Tools..an audio CPU intensive program, has this RMCLOCK software been able to fix this constant max CPU output? I want it to be at max CPU ALL of the time and it is not an option to do otherwise. I am prepared to get more internal or external batteries if need be for this if this has been proven to keep it at the max cpu instead of dropping down to 800mhz. I am not really worried about the drop in the video card because it is only minute difference. Do you think I will fry anything if I constantly keep it at max cpu usage. Granted, it would be nice to throttle the cpu speed when I am not running Pro Tools, but this is so essential for my laptop functioning correctly. If it is provent to work, how long battery life should I expect from it running at max cpu? If there is no way to avoid this, does the Emachine M6811 utilize this throttling correctly and constantly? If so, how long does that last on max cpu usage. Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated since I think I would be going through a lot of headache calling up Gateway with the 7422gx.

SharkonWheels,

I found out this morning, and just returned from getting my refund for the price difference. I really do not like shopping at BB and generally avoid it like hte plauge. I really hate they way the stores are laid out as well as the design of the lines to treat people like cattle to purchase, exchange, or to get a refund at their store. There are several other reasons why, but I could not pass up on this purchase. The lady who processed my refund was very nice and polite and it took all of three minutes for her to do. However, I had to stand in line for nearly 40 minutes just to get it.

Yesterday, I tested the DVD burner by using NTI's BackUp NOW version 3 to create an image of the system after loading nearly all of the software that I will be using. I will carry these disks with me in case of an emergency, rather than the image disks created at by GW's imagin process, until I blow it and switch to XP Pro, and will then repeat the proceedure with the same imaging software and disks.

The imaging started at 15:55:09 and ended at 17:49:23. A tad shy of two hours, but I was in another room for most of it and checked things about every ten (10) minutes or so. The amount of data imaged is 15101.11MB using the internal burner which is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532A (Firmware Version: TI51). Data verification was enabled and there were no errors reported.

The media used was PioData DVD-R 8X 4.7GB White Face Retail Package disks and it took three (3) disks to burn it all.

Also, the speakers suck in an enviroment with a lot of activity and can barely be heard. I found this out Friday when at a clients and one of his employees asked to check out it's DVD capability.

So far I am very pleased with the purchase, and more so with the price reduction.

if the sound driver is anything like the 7405gx, go into the ac97 driver control properties from the shortcut in the control panel, this will allow you to choose different profiles (equilizer settings) for the speakers. There is one called "power" or "powerful" and this made a WORLD of difference, no exaggeration. i thought my unit 'grew' new speakers.

I just returned from the local Best Buy and did a check on their display 7422gx and the device mngr said the burner was a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N. The HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N is a LG and the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532A is either a Toshiba or Samsung. Will Gateway be able to support 2 different burner models with the same notebook model number as far as firmware goes? I don't know if burner firmware upgrades is an issue with anyone but manufacturers are constantly upgrading desktop burner firmware to add media compatibility.I wouldn't want to get stuck with a burner that only reads a few brands of media especially when DL media is still in its infancy.I expect to see lower prices on DL media when everyone starts making it.
I also checked the hard drive brand and it said IN with a bunch of numbers.Does anyone have a clue as to whom makes this? I am still trying to decide whether I want to trade in my HP zv5340 for this model.Cosmetically and bells and whistles aside I like the guts better on the Gateway.

trueno92,

Thank you and this has helped.

goatboy8me,

Good question, but I will look for firmware updates elsewhere if I have to.
so does it have a 9600 or a 9550 video?
I just bought the 7422gz after lingering in this forum for a few weeks. So far am satisfied with it's performance. Doesn't seem blazing fast, but I haven't had a chance to really tweak it yet. I was extremely curious as to what kind of vid card this had, but since no one here wanted to post what it was, I will now do my best. All it says is that it is a MR9600 series chip. The sticker on the computer itself just says "graphics by ATI" while on the 7405 it says ATI 9600. I'm pretty convinced it's just a MR9600. So far the only game I've tried on it was EQ2 and it seems to play it just fine. I haven't really taxed it yet by getting into big battles, but solo fights give me no lag. I haven't installed the omega drivers yet so I don't know what the core and mem speeds are (unless someone can tell me where to find it in the stock drivers) All and for the price you can't touch it, and trust me I've looked. Also for you that have reward zone cards, if you buy it today you will get double points. I have a business reward zone account so that means I'll get a $125 gift card back with this purchase. Not too shabby for all those that use this forum to bash BB. If anyone has any other specific questions just ask me and I'll do my best to get you an answer.

Ok just checked the clock speeds of the gpu via powerstrip. The name of the gpu itself is 9600/9700 series. Mem 202, engine 297. So it's the same as the 9600. Wonder why they list it as 9550, unless that chipset wasn't available when these were built. Maybe if you wait too long to get one of these you'll get stuck w/ a 9550 in yours if that's the case.

I use my 6805 at max always.

The only difference is that the fun will run more often. These CPU's are designed to work at a certain temp all the time.

Also, try undervolting it to keep the temps down.

I was able to undervolt my m6805 to 1.2 volts.
Maybe they're dumping the rest of the 9600's before they switch to the 9550s. Has anyone checked to see is the 9550 is a lower voltage chip than the 9600? If so, that might be the reason for switching...

Undervolt it? Is this a bios feature or an RMCLOCK feature? I would think that that could possibly be detrimental to the HD not running at the right voltage. I emailed Gateway about the problem is this is what they stated...

No, it's true. The processor will adapt it's speed. This is why I have this feature disabled, and have mine at max all the time.

The voltage change only affects the CPU.

The Gateway 7422GX uses a Broadcom a/b/g WLAN. I had to manually install the driver.

Does anyone know what SOUND and MODEM devives the 7422 GX uses?
