I tell you what, for those two purposes there is no better value than this notebooks. Dual Layer DVD+-RW, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD Perfect for burning DVDs etc. And iwhen you want as you said it "get into some gaming" the 64MB DX9.0 GPU and Athlon 64 bit 3400+ CPU will be plenty good. $1249 for this is sheap! No mail in rebate hassle or nothing, just a good ol' sale!

That would be rather cool. As soon as I have a car and my lappy, I'm in.

games for this

Anyone have any suggestions for games for this laptop that will work well with this 9550? I want some good ones too I know I can't play half-life 2 but ohh well...any ideas on what to get?
According to others who have this laptop, Half-Life 2 runs beatifully on this laptop. It should even ba able to handle Doom 3 at slight lower detail levels.
I've run both Doom 3 and HL2 on my 7405, as well as Medal of Honor (AA, Spearhead, Breakthrough), NASCAR Thunder 2004, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, & Enter the Matrix w/o problems. There shouldn't be much difference between the 7405 & 7422.

You won't find a better bang for buck than this. Absolutely gorgeous screen, lots of ram (1Gb), ample storage (80Gb HDD but only 4200 rpm so a possible upgrade to consider), good video (ATI 9550 - called 9600/9700 on machine), nice DVD burner (LG GCA-4080). Even if you factor in $200 to replace the HDD and get an external case for the old drive, you are getting a heck of a deal!

Dang.

Ananconda, I hope you get that notebook quick. You were a great help to me when I had trouble with mine. Thanks again.

Well if it stays on sale I can get it as soon as my tax return gets deposited

Otherwise two weeks for the last check I'll need towards it in addition to my tax return.

(getting $800 tax return, which was over 250 more than I had estimated when I did the form by hand. and I haven't even filled out my state return yet because H&R Online doesn't have the info yet)

I just bought this laptop. I am loving it, but am a little concerned about quality. I am guessing everyone here is not worried. I got rid of my VAIO to buy this. It was slow. I would appreciate any info regarding upgrading the HD. This one seems okay. Any model recommendations and where to buy? Thanks all.

For now, the Hitachi 60gb 7200rpm is the fastest available. You can get it for $150 here:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-020&depa=0

If you can stand to wait, Seagate is going to release a 100gb 7200rpm hard drive, so you get both size and speed. If you do upgrade the hard drive, you can put the old one to good use by putting it in a USB or Firewire case such as this one:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-604&depa=0

Another good upgrade is ram. You can add up to a gig (for a total of 1.25gb) without voiding the warranty and up to two gigs if you don't mind voiding the warranty. Here's a link to cheap and compatible ram, although it's out of stock right now:

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4158153

Also, if you're familiar with Windows, you can upgrade to Windows XP Professional or else reinstall Windows XP Home. Gateway throws in a lot of software that I don't use...I find the easiest way to get rid of it all is to do a nice, clean reinstall

I tried SuSE live cd and Mandrake Move and suse booted but no wireless. Mandrake froze. I would like to do Linux so if someone gets one working, please let us know.

From what I understand the 7422GX uses a Broadcom wireless card, and those suffer somewhat with Linux support. I can't be ceratin there because I still can't afford my own yet. It'll be a few months more at least. But any problem with the wireless under Linux would be driver related, and Broadcom doesn't have the best Linux support.

Did anyone get the Best Buy extended warranty? Are they worth it in the long run? Is there another warranty available from a third party? I already checked gateway and they will not sell me a warranty for a Best Buy model. I would really like the in home warranty if it is available.

Thanks for the info. I'm a little curious tho as to why they partitioned the drive like they did. None of my other laptops came like that. *shrugs*

Partitioned the drive like how? I have a 7405gx...if the 7422gx's don't come with recovery discs, then Gateway probably installed the drivers or recovery software on a seperate partition in case you needed to reinstall. That may be where the extra partition comes from.

I've noticed that there is an 8mb partition on my 7405gx and a few other computers...anyone know what this is for? I don't know if it's just Windows doing something funky, if the drive requires that partition, or if it's just a partition from the factory.

I just found this while googling:

DILX can be VERY destructive and you should take caution when using it. If you select the wrong Units, you WILL DELETE ALL your data.

Are you worried about new disks/units with this partition? or existing units? If you have existing units, there is not much you can do except to run DILX and restore from tape afterwards.

If you have new, unpopulated units, then you can safely run DILX without the loss of data (since there is no data to begin with).

Either way, you need to be VERY careful with DILX. I can offer some steps to help ease the process if you can answer some of my questions.
