NEW GATEWAY OUT 1/9/05 *7422gx* please sticky - Page 2

Do you guys know if it will be available on www.bestbuy.ca ?

Because I would have ordered this one instead of a M6811 at futureshop this week...

So how much will it cost in us$ without taxes ?

Don't worry Thill, I feel your pain. When this comes out if it's specs are that much better than the 7405GX I'm going to try and exchange it... it doesn't hurt to try.

Okay, that's just cool. I think I'm gonna hold off on the 7405GX until I can check out more about this 7422GX. Sweet.

Also I did some checking around on the 9550, and while I couldn't find much on the mobile end, I saw some things about the desktop versions, and some have found very decent overclocking results getting up into the 400Mhz range on the GPU clock. Memory might be different depending on if they use lesser memory chips because of the lower clock. But even at lower clock speeds, the 9550 saw little change from the 9600 in most of the benchmarks I saw.

I bought mine Saturday. After playing around, and finding NO WAY around the 800MHz on battery, I returned it last night to Best Buy, no restocking fee. Kinda' hard to justify to a customer, that he just paid $1300 for an 800MHz notebook.

i just called and they said 15% fee. i think i may go in there and fight about it.

i think if you read the forums there is a way to get around it dropping to 800MGz on battery........

Go in and speak with the manager. Especially if you want the 7422GX, make mention of it. I made a point of the 2.0GHz on the item description sticker, and it only running 800MHz on battery.

BTW, I tried shutting off power mgmt in the power panel, I tried speedswitchXP, man, this thing switched to 800, and freaking STAYED there. Not a single budge. Sandra show it a bit slower than a P3/1Ghz at 800MHz. Sorry, but I'm not dropping $1400 for a P3/1Ghz.

Also, you could try calling 888-BEST-BUY and explaining it to them. I did that, and it kind of helped. They will email the manager an "exception form" although, it is still up to the manager to do it or not.

Biggest thing, is be REEEEALLY nice.

I would not even touch a 7244 if it has a 9550. And BTW, it is not anything to do with the laptop, the battery simply cannot hold up with the cpu running at full speed. It would draw too much power and possibly damage the cells. Arima has locked this in the bios. If arima comes out with a bigger battery, then maybe they will unlock it.

And BTW, I had a Averatec 6130HS and it would stay full speed if I forced it, guess what? 28 minutes out of battery. And it got pretty hot too. At regular managed speed I only got 53 minutes. This is common for this model so I took it back. Can you see why arima chose this way?

I bought a desktop version of the ATI RADEON 9550 for my wifes desktop, with 256 MB RAM. It supports DirectX 9.0. Here is a link to the specifications.

Yes that is exactly why it is locked at 800MhZ and why it has been since the machines started coming out. End of story.

Still haven't been able to find out anything about this 9550. I wouldn't mind though, my desktop machine is a 9500. I'm thinking though its the theory that it's an underclocked 9600, which would be fairly simple to change.
I think you're right Anaconda, from what I've been able to figure, the 9550 is a 9600 clocked at 250/400. I've read that it's normal for these to have overclocking results of 400/500 or more. But that depends on the cooling and other factors obviously. If that's only difference, I won't mind dropping down to the Mobility Radeon 9550. It's not that big of a change.

edit: The only other difference I can find occurs in the lower class models of the 9550, where like the Radeon 9600's lower end models cut the memory interface from 128 bit to 64 bit. We'll have to be careful to notice whether or not the Gateway 7422GX will use a castrated 9550, or just the lower clocked one.

Hmm, this is the most I've found so far looking for this on the internet:

"ATi Mobility Radeon 9550 GPU:325MHz MEM:440MHz 64MB DDR/128Bit "

Found it in a Chinese site, several actually.

... wait I also found this link:

They probablystop selling the 7405gx cause of the cracked hinges problem.
I hope that the new one has the proper/ non defective parts :P
post #34 of 392
I don't know, from the pictures it still looks as if they're using the same Arima body. I personally wonder why in order to introduce a new product they need to discontinue the older one. Why not continue it as a lower end model? I mean it's been around for how many months? 5, mabey 6? That's a short life span.
thats the way eMachines has always done things. 3 month life spans on things, new models each quarter. Sometimes the old models are still available, but all the advertising goes onto the new models.

Quick breakdown of notebooks:

Q2 2003 is when they started doing notebooks IIRC

Some of thes dates may be a little off I'm going by memory here

...what else?

eMachines desktops are done that way as well, with a lot more models of course though.

I was wondering about this Radeon Mobility 9500, I found some settings for it in our Ati Graphics driver. I was like Well at least I have some more info on it

o_O? well, 9500 mobility is a normal card (though not used often these days), but this is a 9550 which is strange and new...

I work at Best Buy, and just bought a 7405 myself. If I had known about this new model before, I might have waited a week before getting one. I haven't seen or heard anything about a new 74xx series, though...

Best Buy has it on the truck

I had to return my emachines M6809 due to several issues. So needless to say they don't have any more of them in stock (purchased June04). They had be browse around for my replacement, so i was looking at the gateway 7405gx (same as the m6809) but they didnt have any in stock. So after a while he decided to check the truck for the 7405, but when he came back he said they have a 7422 on the truck, it will be unloaded tomorrow (Jan 6th).
Can anyone tell me what the performance difference between the radeon 9600 (from the m6809) vs radeon 9550 (as stated for the 7422) would be?
Performance hits will be in the underclocked division, meaning that all performance differences between the 9600 and 9550 will be because of the lower clocked GPU of the 9550. Other than clock speed, the 9550 is exactly the same as the 9600. Both run off the I believe RV360 core, and both have 64 megs of dedicated VRAM. Also both have the same 128bit memory interface, so it should be possible to overclock the 9550 to 9600 speeds and erase the performance difference.
