NEW GATEWAY OUT 1/9/05 *7422gx* please sticky - Page 3

What about the extra ram? How much of differnce if that is upgraded to 1.512GB and a 7405gx has 1.256GB?
Extra RAM in my opinion won't make too much of a difference from 1.25 to 1.5 GB. Going from 512MB to 1.0 GB will certainly make a huge change, but when you get to the 1GB+ range, I'm not sure how much the performance benefit is, especially from 1.25 to 1.5, that's only an additional 256MB. But that's just my opinion, and should only be taken as such.

Good point- but more is always better.
Especially if it doesn't cost you anything
post #44 of 392
More is only better only if you will be utilizing it. If you are running apps to take advantage of the extra memory or doing some heavy multitasking, it will of course be better. That is also that much less the swap file will be accessed.
Well, I'm a CS major so I code (preferably games) but I like the ability to load up a good game occasionally and let it rip. Memory is always good, but I would like video that will allow me to play some of the newer games as they are released.

Any info on bios version and whether the new machine comes loaded with SP2 or not?
I did find out the price of the 7422GX - $1399.99, same as the 7405 it replaces. Haven't been able to find BIOS specs, but I'd almost guarantee that SP2 is preinstalled.

[quote=lancev]So as some of you may know I work at best buy and there are ways to see new units before gateway announces them, as they must be in our system before we can receive them. So anyways on 1/9/05 the new gateways will be arriving, as many of you may have seen the 7405gx are clearnced out and the 7422gx is the next in line. This model has much dissappoitment to it though.

The site with the PDF spec sheet is down at the moment and I forgot to grab the paper I printed up with the sku on it from work tonight, I will get this tommarrow, I promise.

The specs are as follows.
A64 3400+
1024MB ram
80gig hd
8x dvd burner
ATI 9550 Mobile
15.4 Xbrite screen

(QUOTE)

I just wanted to pass along that I was trying to purchase a 7405 at BB and they had none in stock so they ordered me one from a nearby BB store.
This was Last Friday they told me that it would be in on Monday.
Called Monday and they said due to the holiday there were no trucks loaded for the delivery. They said it would be her Wednesday, I called Wednesday and they had no record of it being ordered.

I found this forum last night and read what you said about the 7422 being the replacement for the 7405...glad I found it.
Today I drove the 100 miles to the store because they were trying to sell me an hp for another $350
I talked to the teamleader who had supposed to ordered the 7405 and asked him about the new 7422...........he had no idea that they were even going to get a replacement.
So he checked and said that he that he had 5 arriving on the truck tonight.
SO since I live 100 miles away he said that since I had so much trouble that he was going to take care of me personally and ship it fedex tomorrow.

Well we will see.

I am hoping that it is worth the wait.

Thanks for putting this info on here about the 7422...

Well, I got the 7422 today, it comes loaded with XP home with SP2. Then, it comes with 6 blank cdr's so you have to make the restore disks yourself on the first boot. Haven't done anything with it yet but the extra bright screen will take some getting used to by me (not used to seeing a reflection of myself in the screen but can be handy to see who's behind me).

kisea, when you can, get us some first hand info on the video card. I'd be interested in knowing how it really performs, and how well it overclocks.

Fire the Gateway Product Manager

Details of Radeon 9550 is at (COmparision of all cards)
http://techreport.com/etc/comparo/graphics/

9550 is less than half effective as 9700(9700 works at lower clock than 9600)

Oh My Gosh...Gateway has lost visibility it seems.....

People bought their systems because they offered the best specs....

Now Gateways are downgrading themselves with time...like

First came 7405 GX...then (at CompUSA) 7410 and now 7422 at BB.

The specs has been reduced gradually(on performance side)
Rams I can always increase on my own but never think of changing graphics....

Instead for 7405 GX they shud have changed the case and put 1*512 ram
and left the other slot blank for user to upgrade.

Fire the Gateway Product Manager !!!!

Thanx I will not buy the Gateway ...instead will think of Mayhem G3 or the cost effectice Cyberpower/ibuypower's systems (comes with 9700 with 128 mb at $1250) or will wait a month more for the new A64 9 micron being lauched this month

it sucks for us non-gamers. i'm sure this card would be fine for my office work and internet and dvd encoding. i could use the extra ram and better processor for the same price..........

The link you are looking at is listing only desktop graphics cards, not the mobility 9550/9600/9700.

Performance wise the m9600 is pretty close to the m9700. As long as the m9550 is a underclocked m9600 it should perform fairly well and if overclocked hopefully will match the m9600.
My worry about the lower clocked GPU is the cooling. They may have jacked that part of the 9550 because of the lower heat output.
So I guess now we have to wait for another brave soul to dismantle their new lappy and tell us what's inside, or can you get fan/cooling info from somewhere else?
Alright one paycheck closer to buying one of these

It should have SP2 installed from what I can find out.

Gateway 7422 (ATI Radon mobility 9550)

I purchased this machine, (Havent even opened the box yet) but looking at other Laptops (ACRE Ferrari) I am very interested in the ATI Radon 9700. Can anyone tell me if this graphics card can be changed with out too many problems.
It is an integrated GPU. It cannot be changed out.

I'm extremely interested about this new gateway. People that have bought it, can you please tell us how you like it? I went to my local BB and they have sold out of the two that they had in stock already. Of course because it's so new, most of the employees didn't even know this notebook existed.
I bought the 7422GX last Friday. It's supposed to come with Microsoft Money 2004 pre-installed, but it did not. I've exchanged numberous emails with Gateway support, and they are so clueless! I had to send them a link to their own website so that they could find the specs on this notebook. So finally I called Gateway, and they are telling me I have to do a full system restore. Has anyone else experienced missing software?
