NEW GATEWAY OUT 1/9/05 *7422gx* please sticky - Page 4

Even if I didn't get Microsoft Money with mine, it wouldn't deter me from getting one. When I'm able to afford one, first thing I'm doing is wiping out WinXP Home and putting on WinXP Pro. Then I'll fiddle with Suse 9.2 and see if I can get that running good. I never cared much about bundled software. Here all I really care about is Nero.

Actually it would probably be a good idea to first burn the restore CDs just in case These machines don't come with Restore CDs, instead there is an application to burn them yourself (yet they include blank CDs for some reason )

Ok, after burning the restore CD's, WinXP Home goes bye bye.

Just bought the 7422GX from BB. Their generous return policy was important to me because I need to configure this machine for professional audio use. Such things as how noisy the machine operates is important to me, for example. If the machine cannot fulfill its specific mission for me, I will have to return it. Though sadly, because it does seem like a fine machine at first introduction. So I hope it will work.
Here are some specs of this machine so far:
MobileAMD64 3400+
1 Gig RAM
WinXP Home SP2
The device manager says the lappy has an "ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 Series"

Can anyone tell me how I can find out what chipset is used in the machine. I think its a VIA of some sort. I need to confirm that its compatible with Magma expansion chassis and RME audio interfaces.

In advance, any help from this forum is appreciated.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the unit in my hands.

So is the 7422GX model only at Best Buy and not on thier website or in any other store yet?
There seems to be some serious corporate restructuring going on. Before I bought the unit, I called Gateway itself for info, and the techs there said the model is not in their records at all. They said that Gateway seems to be building units for specific vendors and the "official Gateway" knows little about them or they have different model numbers. The unit is very new, so maybe they just did not get the details yet. But I found it curious.

In any case, I think I prefer to deal directly with BB than with Gateway. I think the warrenty period is long enough to find out if the unit is a lemon or if design flaws are discovered in the model. I hope.

Gateway basically has two distribution methods:

Gateway Direct: Sold through the website or over the phone. Or in the past through the Gateway stores.
Gateway Retail (eMachines is considered part of Gateway Retail) : Sold through retail channels.
(Both types of machines can be bought at HSN though... really confusing)

A good number of agents in Gateway Direct have been there for a long time and either aren't used to or haven't heard of the Gateway Retail distribution method. If it was a Direct person you spoke to I can understand why they didn't know what you were talking about.

(Retail has the information, at least today when I went to look at some particular specs for it... says Radeon 9550, so who knows... man I want to get one )

Me too- soon as my 6805 RMA comes back- off to ebay it goes!
When I saw the floor model, I checked device manager and it said 9600/9700 Series. On all the shipping boxes it said Radeon 9550. So I had the manager open the box I was going to buy and confirm that it has the 9600/9700, which it did.

My friend who is a corporate type says that computer sales profits are so razor thin that it sometimes is not worth it to change packaging or labels that were designed earlier in the production timetable.

But how can I find out exactly what kind of VIA chipset is in here?
According to the spec sheet, the chipset is VIA K8T800.

I picked one up on Monday at the local Best Buy. Wiped XP Home and put Professional on.

It's a great computer so far but, of course, now I'm trying to resolve the "800 MHz on battery" issue. I've tried AMD CPU drivers 1.0 & 1.1 and the normal utilities (Crystal CPUID & SpeedswitchXP). I can get it to throttle the CPU great when the AC is plugged in but as soon as the plug is removed the CPU jumps to 800 MHz. I've opened a case with Gateway support and when I get through to a real engineer I'll update the thread.
The "issue" is Arima design to prevent damage to the battery. Not really anything you can do about it if what you've already tried hasn't worked.
The 800MHz deal would only matter if you intend to do CPU intensive stuff on battery power. In which case your battery might last 30-45min running at 2.2Ghz. Not only that, these batteries just aren't as advanced as the computer they're powering. They just can't take that kind of stress.
All I want is the throttling ability while on battery. I plan on riding the train to work (45 minutes) and will be doing development work with Visual Studio and a SQL backend. The actual time that the CPU will be taxed will be 5% max. But during that time I need all of the CPU. I figure that with the throttling ability and the amount of CPU usage I'll need the battery should last about 80-90% of what it would've if it were at 800 MHz the whole time.

Now if I were going to be converting DVD's to Xvid or Playing Doom 3 while on battery that would be a different matter.

Mobile Athlon 64 or not?

One thing about the Gateway 7422GX specified here:

http://www.gateway.com/home/products...t_7422gx.shtml

is that it doesn't claim to have a "Mobile" Athlon 64. It just says
"Athlon 64-bit...Mobile Processor". Since they aren't using the
AMD trademark, it's probably a desktop replacement (DTR) chip
which takes 89W instead of 62W. This is in contrast to the 7405GX:

http://www.gateway.com/home/products...t_7405gx.shtml

Does anyone know if the Emachines models also drop to 800 MHz
in battery mode?
All the laptops based off Arima's model, such as the Gateway 74xx, the emachines M68xx, and the Voodoo's will all scale down to 800Mhz on batery mode. It's something Arima designed it to do.

Also I'd still bet that the 7422GX is running the 62w Mobile Athlon64. The Emachines M6811 has the same Athlon64 3400+ and I believe it's a 62w Mobile Athlon64 as well, I doubt the new Gateway would be any different.

I had to roll back the CPU driver to make sure but as I'm writing this I'm on battery power and "AMD PowerNow! Dashboard" is showing 1.400 Volts, 100% CPU Speed, and min. Battery Savings. The driver is the default supplied with SP2:

Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 4/1/2004
Driver Version: 5.1.2600.0

The 800 MHz trigger doesn't appear to part of the notebook manufacturer's design but rather a software driver related signal.

If I put the computer into Standby mode the CPU will drop to 0.950 Volts and 36% CPU Speed (800 Mhz). It will not achieve full speed again until a reboot.

Use RMClock from Right Media. It allows throttling while on battery. It works smoother than PowerNow! also. It steps in 100MHz increments, whereas PowerNow appears to step in 200MHz increments. There should be a link in the support section.

As I mentioned in the other thread (7405GX Power Management / CPU speeds) RMClock works great. It dynamically adjusts the CPU speed and voltage whether on battery or AC adapter. I tested going into and out of Standby and it didn't skip a beat.

Thanks again.

Did I mention that Gateway e-mail support is worthless?
