3.06 + hyperthreading (HT)

Thread Starter
Any one have any idea when the software for pentium 4 - 3.06 with Hyperthreading is due out for laptops?

Also what are the requirements ie chipsets etc ?

I read an article that the hyperthreading makes the computer think that there are 2 processors ( one a virtual one ) so one can do multi tasks much faster.
Also it is quite expensive ! Is it worth the money?

PS seasons Greetings !! Hope you all enjoyed the turkey!! Now to get smashed for New Year!!!!!p

I heard that it might be out early next year. I agree ht would be really nice, but it would also be really expensive. The problem is that most programs aren't written to support multiple threads, so it won't really change anything. If you are just plaing one game, it will just be like a 3.06 ghz without ht. When you have like 5 or 6 apps open, then it can really come in handy. I might purchase it, but it depends how expensive it would be. I also heard that there might be some heat problems with it.

What I am really waiting for is a dvd burner....!

I've asked this before...

It hasn't changed much and there's a lot of rumors. Though Hyperthreading is available in the 3.06GHZ chip, it's not able to be enabled on very many motherboards at all, and NO mobile systems. The 3.06GHZ chip will work in the 8886 system, but HT will not and therefore the price is not worth the gains over the 2.8GHZ CPU. Clevo is working on a way to have it working but isn't committing to anything or wanting to give an estimated time frame. Alienware's system, as with the Sager 5660 system is not marketable with the 3.06GHZ cpu because they are still working out heat dissipation issues. That's the last I heard on that. Now that's from an honest and what I would consider informed tech... not a salesman reading from an FAQ sheet.
So I don't think it'll be TOO long to find out how to make it work, but it's an undefined time.

Yes, hyperthreading does make two virtual processors. Some programs can use it, such as photoshop, outlook...but many aren't aligned to it yet. Just as many aren't aligned for dual processing.

An update to what I had said before is I'm not sure if Alienware is shipping with the 3GHZ CPU, they may now. Hyperthreading still isn't working in any of the Clevo systems that I'm aware of. I wish I had a date I would let everyone know, but they're working on it with no estimates if/when.

Also, you will have to be running Windows XP to really utilize the HT it appears.

For people that don't understand what it does...
Most CPUs task programs dedicating clocks and work per task. Other tasks may have to wait even though the CPU isn't being fully used on the task it's working on. HT allows work to be done together by fooling the system to send work and do it at the same time through the processor as if it were a dual processor system.

I don't know what this will do as far as heat is concerned and that could play an important role especially in the laptops. I doubt they know if the cooling is sufficient or will until they actually have it enabled.

HT on laptops would probably drain the battery life; too much work.

Actually no, the difference between the drainage of the 2.8 ghz processor and the 3.06 wouldnt be big, because the core hasnt changed, they run in 1.5v, both of them, thats why the p4m processors save power, because they underclock based on the voltage, they can lower their voltage to somewhere around 1v, i dont know exactly, while the desktop ones cannot do that, they always run in the same voltage.

Hope i explained myself...

Well, regardless of the voltage, if there is more heat produced, that indicates less efficiency, and I assume it would mean more battery drain...
