Knoppix Install on HD 8790

I think I'm getting ready to take the plunge and install Knoppix to my hard drive and dual boot with XP. I've used the Live CD for a while now and it really has some neat features, but I'm just not ready to give up my XP (mainly due to some expensive programs I own. Anyone have any suggestions. I'm not stuck on Knoppix, but would like to utilize a Live CD to check out any other distros you may suggest. Also, I would really like to run Linux at 1680 x 1050, but have found very little in the way of information on how to accomplish it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
