I decided to post this here as I thought it pertained to sager. I was wondering which one to buy. I basically only need a high-end laptop for gaming but I also use it for dvd playing and mp3's. I wanted to know which os version I should purchase from pctorque. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Heck XP PRO all the way... blows HOME out of the water... but thats just my oppinion.

Win 2000 Pro pwnz both like a l33t n1nj4 05! XP can go and serve as a coaster for me. W2K all the way!!!

Pro by far. It has much more compatibility and capability. Home, really, IMO, is simply a scaled down version of XP Pro, or a suped up version of Win2k, made to look pretty.

You mean XP Home is a scaled down version of XP Pro which is a fancy looking but not as reliable and efficient version of W2K. W2K will knock out Pro any day. Bring over your Sager. We shall see who gets the best 3D Mark ratings.

is there any evidence that win2000 pro operates better than xp pro. If this is the case, i would gladly switch back over to win2000. I had it before and loved it but when i switched over to win xp, it somehow lost my registry file one day. Almost lost all my data...

XP Pro will not be able to join a domain. You will not be able to attach the lappy to your office's network and login (assuming they let you). XP Home is limited to workgroup of x computers. I can remember how many computers - probably less than ten.

XP Pro will let you join a domain. I configured all the laptops for teachers at my school, all with XP Pro, and they all joined our district-wide domain without error.

I'm sure you meant XP HOME will not allow you to join a domain...

...and I think doggonit likes Win2K better because they screwed up his copy of XP with the release of SP1... *wink* *wink*

They're nearly identical, and Pro is usually an extra hundred bucks. So unless you need to run a server, join a domain, use remote access, or use multiple (physical) processors, get Home.

In my opinion, if you need computer to just connect to the internet, watch DVD movie, office, play games then why pay the extra for Windows XP Professional.
Windows XP Pro will use much more system resource than the Home edition.
I saw so many people use Windows XP Pro and they turn off all unnessary services (mostly networking and security) for reserve the system resources. I ask them why you bought Pro edition in the first place if you don't even use those features? They simply just said they need the best.

I don't see why pay more for the stuffs that you don't need.... Home and Pro are built in the same core. It's exactly the same OS [Compatibility and Stability]... Don't just buy it because it said "Hey this is Professional version, I'm better than you...I'm the best !!!"

Ask youself if you really need those extra Networking and Security feature of Pro version or not. If you want those extra features then go with Pro , if not then Home edition is just as good as Pro or even faster for gaming with much less in price.

XP Pro allows for Remote Control-- pcAnywhere type of functionality. Very worth it in a networked home with multiple computers in my opinion.

Exactly. I've been saying this for quite a while. It seems like many people who bought XP pro aren't even clear about how it differs from XP Home.

Having used both Pro and Win2k, I would definetly stick with Pro. Now, if I had to choose which one to run a server with (and couldn't use linux), I would probably go with Win2k. For just personal use, I have though had better stability with Pro.
