I ordered the 80 gig 5400 RPM ATA100 lappy and was looking at the specs that AW sent with it. They said 80GIG 5400RPM SCSI.....is that the same as SATA or is it the same as ATA100 or is it entirely different

if im not mistaken ATA SATA and SCSI are all totaly different but i could be VERY VERY wrong so dont quote me... i got the Raid 0 80gb... can someon tell me how htat works.... is it double the speed of the HDD as the speed like 10,800rpn for 2 5400rpm drives?

RAID 0 consists of two drives in an array. The data is striped across both drives, increasing performance, but not doubling it.

There are multiple forms of RAID

Here is some more information. . .

Single Drive VS RAID 0

As for AW config menu it looks like an ATA100 interface.

Anyone know what RAID controller Alienware is using?

SATA and SCSI are two different animals. Generally speaking its not a matter of which one is faster or better because they both have thier pros and cons. SCSI is generally better for larger networks. For a personal computer though, you might get better performance from SATA. Both are superior to IDE

Hi, I just asked Alienware and they are not offering SATA drives at all nor drivers they only offer ATA 100 IDE Drives, but they did say the 7700 notebook can be upgraded to a SATA drive just they do not offer the upgrade at this time. Also I asked why type of RAM is used and they said Samsung unless otherwise noted. Oh, does anyone know were to get a SATA drive for notebooks?

I do have a stupid question. I am thinking on upgraded my harddrive from 5400 to 7200rpm drive non raid but worried about battery life(battery life minimul as it is) and heat produced, what is everyones opinion on this. I am in phase 3 so I have time to change my order. Took 14 days to get to phase 3 so I think there is no rush to get mine anytime soon.

I needed the storage...heck...if the 100gig wasn't so slow (4200) I would have gotten it. If you need the storage go with a 80 gig (7200 if they offer it, they did not at the time of my order) if you need speed, go with the 60gig 7200 rpm

Interesting I called them the other day and they said they were putting Corsair in my Machine. Maybe because the original RAM I selected was Corsair 2x1024 and they ran out so they had to go to the 4x512, I guess thats what the guy ment by yeah its the same as what you had ordered just more sticks etc... so maybe I lucked out??? I will check it when I get it and see for sure if it's Corsair or not. If not.........

I would go with the 7200, it's a Hitachi 24/7 run Drive, much faster and more reliable.

Yeah, 5400 RPM drives can make it feel like it's taking forever for gaming, especially when switching between levels. Watching stuff from the hard disk drive also feels as if you're going in slow motion or stuttering XD Do the wise thing and upgrade to 7200RPM...if you have the money the investment makes up for itself. The speed difference between a 5400 and 7200 are very distinct and noticeable.
