8600 and hard drive noise (*not* the clicking one)

Hi guys, just received my brand new i8600c and already loving it. Everything runs good and everything seems fine. But there is something that bugs me, could you try a thing for me? If you use your 8600 in a completely silent room, without noises and without using the system too much, so with both fans turned off, does a small noise, similar to that of a small fan, come from just where the hd is, under the left palm rest? That is the only noise I hear, I think it's around 15dB, and dunno if it's normal. I think my hd is an Hitachi, I'm gonna use the utility found on their site to try to silent it, but still I wanna some feedback from you, is that whirling (not clicking) there also in yours 8600? Thanks.

Maybe its the buzzing problem that people have had with the 8600?

I have some intermittent noise coming from the CPU, and while it's annoying, no fixes for that noise yet.

No, I checked, I don't have the buzzing sound of the usb root or any unpleasant sound coming from where the cpu is, I'm quite sure it's the hard disk 'cause it really comes from there when I put my ear near. Maybe it's just the normal sound of its spinning plates, but I'd want to know from you how loud is on yours. I, at night in a completely silent room with both systems fan turned off, can hear a small whirling sound, similar to that of a really small fan, do you hear the same or your 8600 is "completely" silent?

Maybe it's just me, and I'm asking too much to my 8600...however I really love it

Ok, I'm sure it's the hardrive also for me. So I suppose that the whirring sound is normal in every 8600, in fact my external LaCie 3,5" 200Gb 7200rpm drive is way louder, so a minimal noise on a 2,5" 5400rpm drive like the one on my 8600 is inevitable. I just wanted to be sure.. thanks for the feedback

I used to have the Hitachi 4200 30gb drive in my I8600, I replaced it with the 7k60, It was way loud. Some crazy fan noise or whirring, I spoke with Hitachi support and they had no clue. I thought it was a bad drive so I sent it back and got another one. It did the same thing, so I ended up just keeping it and living with the noise. You can change the power settings though with a hitachi utiility, it helps a little when your doing things like word processing or something but when you want power it takes a few extra seconds to kick into gear and start processing stuff.

15 dB is really very little... it's probably higher than that if it annoys you
Even quiet notebook hard disks are rated around 17-20 dB @ 1 meter.

You are probably just hearing the hard disk spin... after all, it has a motor...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I know of the Hitachi utility, I'll try to force silent mode when I have time and see the performance difference. And yes, the whirring sound is very quiet, my external 3,5" LaCie 7200rpm makes an huge noise, just for comparison.

You know, probably mine was simply "just after buy" paranoia
