Opinion - keep 9200 or return it and get the 9300?

I need some advice here.

I currently own a i9200, the specs of which are in my sig.

I am currently in contact with a rep from Dell who is trying to get me a non-sparkley UXGA screen for a replacement. I am in my 21 day return period and i'm contemplating returning it if they cannot get me a satisfactory replacement. I game alot and also need the UXGA res for school, so i'm sticking with that res no matter what lappy I get.
I read the Inspiron 9300 posts and I am regretting buying the 9200. I bought it late last month and I didn't think that a new Dell Alviso system was going to be out this soon. The conundrum i'm in at the moment is that i'm stuck trying to figure out what to do here. I got the i9200 for $1940 total in the EPP program with a 20% off coupon, the 12% EPP coupon, and the $200 coupon. That was a great deal and i'm reluctant to give up that kind of a deal if i'm going to have to pay full price for the 9300 if I wait for it. I don't have alot of money to work with here, but i'm willing to spend a little bit more to get the 9300 because IMO it is a bit future proof. I also have to have a laptop for school at the end of January, and i'm not sure when the 9300 would be available.
The thing i'm worried about is giving up the good deal I got on my 9200. I like the 9200 alot, but i'd definitely feel unhappy with it if it was only a month old and it was already obsolete. I understand that it's still a great system and all, but it is also an issue of spending my money wisely. I'm not made of money, so I can't buy the latest and greatest every 6 months. I have to pick and choose my purchases and get the best I can for what I spend.
I'll talk to my rep tomorrow, but what are the chances that the 9300 will be within the same price range as the 9200 (+/- $200)? Do you think that Dell may let me return my 9200 and re-use my coupons to purchase a future Dellsystem, the yet to be released 9300?

Any advice here would be appreciated.

Keep the 9200.

You should keep your laptop, you have a nice system. If you buy the 9300 it will be more money with fewer coupons. By the time you get the 9300 something better will be out, it’s a never ending process.

Enjoy

Close to zero. DDR2 RAM is twice as expensive as DDR. The video card will command close to a $400 premium. New Intel CPUs always have a crazy premium (look at the P4EE, with a $1000 premium).

If money is no object, go with the new 9300. If you're sane, stick with the 9200.

Trust me, money is definitely an object! I went so far as to buy a 20% off Dellf coupon on eBay to save some extra cash.

LeafsBlow29 - you have the Y4014 display, correct? I'm tryingto get my Dell CS rep to send me a replacement 9200 with that screen. It seems that this model display is the best, and i'm hoping that Dell can accomodate me. it seems like they're bending over backwards to help me out - buying the premier warranty might have been a good thing after all :-)

EDIT - LeafsBlow29, I just realized that you live in WNY. Any chance you want to risk a trip to Buffalo to let me have a look at your Y4014 UXGA?

shiat, return it mon.

Keep it - it won't be $200 or $300 more for a 9300, it will be more like $800 or $1200 I bet.

Your best bet for the screen will probably be to get the technicial to show up with one as opposed to building a new one. If you follow the other threads Inu_Yasha has given up returning them and is awaiting for a screen in the mail (I believe he is replacing WxGA+ but same difference.)

Depends on how late in December. There's a good chance the i9300 will be announced with the official kickoff of Alviso around Jan 18, so if that's still within your 21 days you can decide then. If not, since you are trying to get another screen, you could go for a system replacement which would give you another 21 days and possibly a good screen. If that came with another bad screen, and you decide to keep the i9200, you could try to get just the screen replaced.

I'm waiting for my replacement to arrive Friday, and hopefully it won't have another sparkley W4554 screen.

I think the price premium for it will be greater than $200, but on the other hand the price on the i9200 may be lowered also. Just guessing at this point.

Another thing to note is that when new models are released like the i9300 in late Jan... there will be the usual new model delay and you are unlikely to see one before mid-Febuary or even later. Personally, and especially if price is an issue, I would stick with the i9200 as although the i9300 will offer a great performance advantage it will come at a huge price premium.

Wow I thought I was bad when it came to the great tech update cycle. I usually love to have the latest and the greatest mostly to my expense but there's something you need to realise about a PC/laptop, it is essentially a tool not a luxury item. The only way to get the most bang for your buck is not to buy the latest tech out there but rather a machine that will do what you need it to do. If you play games a lot and need the UXGA screen for school, you should base your purchase on those facts and not simply be looking at which system is the newest and which isn't. Look also at the lifetime you are looking at for the system and whether you estimate you'll need to upgrade anything (HDD, vid card, etc.) then decide which system is right for you.

Now I'm not saying the 9200 is better for you than the 9300, you'd have to decide. But for me, who's basically in the same boat as you - my 9200 should be coming tomorrow or the day after, the thing is I wanted a system primarily for school work (CAD, GIS, Excel, etc.) and a little if any gaming so to me the 9200 is more than adequate. I want the 9300 but I need the 9200. You get me? Weigh your wants and your needs.

But damn if I had money, I'd have every new system out there

*caught on the tech wheel like a hamster*

Keep the 9200. Now saying that I'm waiting for the new version to come out but I don't need a computer immediately. I agree that there will be delays on them and don't anticipate getting one until February/March.

I would keep the 9200, I think the 9300 with the DDR2, will be expensive. Just remember no matter what you do, there will always be something newer, faster, or better, the second you purchase your laptop. The 9200 has a really good bang for your buck.

Keep it rather than save big bucks for something that hasn't even hit the market it might be a lemon like my I8500 was that Dell replaced me with well upgraded I-8600C. IMHO

KEEP the 9200. Runs cool and has a long battery life and is rather easy to move around.

If money is no object, get the 9300 otherwise keep the 9200. 'Nuff said.

The 9300 will probably be the same price (since it's replacing the 9200 presumably) and will offer PCI-Express graphics. How often does the video card market change from one slot to another? Well, PCI was passed up by AGP six years ago, so PCI-Express will be the new standard for a good amount of time. I suggest taking advantage of it.

The 9300's graphic card will offer 48% increase in performance, in comparison to the 9200's vid. card. It's almost equal to today top desktop's graphic card performance. You can check it @ tomshardware for the review.

I would say keep the I9200, the price difference is most likely going to be way over $300 and you WILL have to wait for about a month or so before your computer even goes into building. I have first hand experience on this as my I9200 is a replacement for the no longer built I9100.

The reason behind my opinion on the price increase is the MR9800. Look how much more money it costs XPS users to upgrade from a MR9700 to a MR9800 and imagine doing this on a already high end laptop. I'm assuming the price will be above the XPS (and I9200) because the chipset, vid card, and ram is more expensive.

If money and time is not a problem, then wait it out and get the I9300, but if you want a nice system, stay with the I9200.
