Clevo D470K (Sager 4750) or Uniwill R259IA3 or Compaq X6000

So I'm looking for help trying to decide between these three Notebooks.
I understand that there are quite a few differences but I was wondering if anyone could point some more of the pros and cons out.

I'm ideally looking for a notebook that will be able to keep up for the next three yrs or so.

Uniwill R259IA3
Intel Pentium M CPU up to 2Ghz
15.4" WSXGA (1680 X 1050) Display
DDR333 Memory, up to 2GB
Ultra ATA Hard Drive, up to 100GB
8x24x24x24 DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
ATI Mobility 9700 256MB Video Memory

Clevo D470K
AMD Athlon 64 DTR CPU, from 3000+ to 3700+
17" WSXGA+ TFT LCD
DDR400 Memory, up to 2GB
2.5" Hard Drive, up to 80GB
8x24x24x24 DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB VRAM

Compaq X6000
Intel(R) Pentium(R)4 processor 540 w/HT Technology (3.4 ghz)
17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1440x900)
1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz
80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW Combo
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600

I've been leaning towards the Clevo for the AMD 64, but then I came across the Compaq with the PCI Express, and the Uniwill with a lighter case and 256 VRAM. The cons I'm seeing are that the Compaq is only configurable with a 4200 rpm hard drive, the Uniwill is only compatible with 333mhz ram, and the Clevo is just the most expensive, but only by $100 to $300.

I was hoping that maybe people out there might be able to relat experiences with any of these systems and sway me differently.

I've seen the reviews on the Clevo (Sager) and the Uniwill systems, but I haven't seen any follow ups or long term reevaluations of the units. I've seen mixed reviews of other Uniwill systems which scare me a little, and Compaq has been trying to clean up their rep since HP picked them up.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

The Uniwill only supports DDR333 because of the limitations of the current Pentium M chipset. If you want a future-proof system, get a system that uses PCI-Express graphic modules. Upgradeable graphics=w00t. There should be Athlon 64-based PCIe systems sometime this month, or at least this quarter.

Well,

Im pretty much decided to buy the uni. I few people have ordered it and it should arrive between this week and the next. Hopefully theyll post more reviews as they have said.

About your con on the uni, not true look at www.viciouspc.com, which has an option to go up to 1024 mb RAM at 400 mhz. Also its the cheapest configuration ive found. So I will probably by it from them once I sell my current system.

Well hope you decide on it. Good luck

The Uniwill website specs it as a max 333mhz. I think Vicious is using the same pulldowns for all their systems, because I haven't found any other reseller that is specing it with 400mhz ram. Yuriseal also mentioned that the P-M only supports 333 and researching that a bit more it seems true.

Vicious is selling it with 400 MHz because, to put it frankly, they're jerks. They make it sound like they're selling you faster RAM, but it'll run at the same speed.

I hope you enjoy your new laptop!

Are you being sarcastic, or are you actually pissed that I would get the lappy from vicious. Don't rain on others paraids. If you have issues with them then objectively inlighten us instead of attacking others. Keep that anger beast restrained

If I should be worried about vicious I am the first to want to hear about it. Reseller ratings has decent posts about them. They did drop the ball in the sense that this system went up $200 since they first announced it, they said that there had been a mistake with the website. Ive emailed them about and am waiting for a response.

If they are doing what yuo state it doesnt make much sense to risk attacks like yours for the measily profit they would make from upgrading from 333 to 400 (like 30 bucks for us and probably 10 for them). Thats why I might agree that they just coppied the pull down menus from their other systems. Or maybe Id rather presume good will until theres actually some proof that its them trying to rip us off.

Just my two cents

yuriseal's comment reflects the fact that some shops will up-sell RAM. u can advertise your systems as having DDR 400, and in fact put DDR 400 modules in the laptop which will run them @ 333 bus speed.

a somewhat different example is when i bought my old compaq, new, w/ the understanding that it had a DMA-66 bus (back in the day) for the hard drive and motherboard. well the HD was DMA-66 but the motherboard only supported DMA-33. not cool, even less cool that i discovered this after the warranty was up as i was swapping out the HD.

i have yet to run into a laptop BIOS which allows the bus speed manipulations that would allow memory bus overclocking, like 3rd party desktop motherboards allow. (if anyone has knowledge otherwise please share.) even so, shops would be unlikely to tweak these settings upward as it increases the risk of service returns.

so yeh, give them a call to find out for sure. be specific in asking about the bus, and if they are charging you extra for 400 RAM, push them on giving you 333 for cheaper since as noted the 400 will not give you any bus speed advantage as it will be underclocked. if they say all they carry is 400, tell them you're aware that the current PM chipset only supports 333, and ask if they'll discount the memory. in short, let them know u r informed and don't let them blow smoke up yer @ss. (btw 333-->400 provides little if any advantage when the bus speed actually is changed. check the 333 vs 400 reviews @ your local tech site. any significant performance differences between the 2 occur primarily when u have the performance RAM and timings to tweak, again the domain of desktop components)

hope this helps. =)

All that I'm saying is that they're selling 400 MHz RAM because it looks better on the specs sheet than 333 MHz RAM. It's not intended as an insult (quite) to ViciousPC, provided that they're still charging competitively for RAM, and it's not insulting you.

@ tridone

Thanks for that info. If you look at the config I expect to buy Im getting the laptop with 1024 mb RAM @ 333 mhz. I agree with you that it shouldnt make much of a difference even if it supported it.

They do offer varios options at 333 and 400. I will definetly give them a call and advize them to update their website taking out the 400mhz options. Well we'll see what they say.

Ok,

I called vicious, and honestly wasn'y really impressed. First off the guy who answered spoke very poor english. To the point that I really had to focus to be able to unserstand him.

Second, he did not seem to know alot about the systems, or maybe it was the language. Things I did find out are:

The prices on their website are correct now. Still the best deal by a couple of hundred dollars from what I've found.

The guy, even though as I mentioned did not seem to know much. He said that it did support the 400mhz ram.

I am going to call again later today to see If I can speek to someone different.

Another thing that was pointed out on another thread was that the dimensions specified everywhere could not fit a 15.4" screen (10.2 x 12.1 x 0.9/1.4) and thats wright. I called rjtech and the guy measured one to be around 14.1" wide.

WHy aren't you buying from RJtech? Their prices are the best I have found so far, and every e-mail I've sent them has been responded to in 24 hrs. They also seem to offer free ground shipping. I browsed the viscious sight and I didn't feel they were cheaper.
Well Maybe its the config I want cause at rjtewch its 150 dollars more and it does not have free shipping. So it should come out to be around 200 more.

So I checjed out Vicious and RJtech and configured identical systems. They both offer free shipping right now (Ground shipping that is, not sure where you are.) and Vicious has a rebate right now that brings the price down but idon't see how long that is going to last. So if your buying you better get on it before those rebates and free shipping offers go away. Good luck.
