External USB Hub Problems?

I have an external SIIG SlimHub USB 2.0 hub connected to the rear of my 6809. Connected to it I have a HP9650 printer and a Maxtor external drive. Occasionally when I boot up the Laptop the hub will not detect these items. Sometime I can reboot only once and correct this problem but sometimes I have to reboot several times. Since I have has the Laptop (7 months) all I have done to it is run the windows update.... No driver changes, bios changes or SP2. Could my problem be with the quality of the hub or is this a common problem with the 6809. I should mention that all of my other usb ports are filled with external keyboard, mouse and Palm Pilot.

Plenty of posts on this issue from me an others (syarost).
Its an emachine issue and you need to RMA to repair.
Do a search and you read all about our headaches
Here is a thread as well:

Thanks Zero now for my next question. I use my Laptop everyday for Autocad. It is very time consuming setting up the menus, printers and other items. If I sent it back to EMachines without the hardrive in it would they repair the usb problem or not? I work out of my home and have put all of my eggs in this one basket. I will most likely have to take vacation time while this is being repaired. Do I have any alternatives? I may be able to do without the 2.0 speeds, I use the external drive to back up the days work (15 mb tops). Overall I am very satified with my 6809 it takes everything I throw at it.

I wish I had good news for you.
Otherwise, I hope you have plenty of vacation time saved up.

I would gaurantee they would not touch it w/o the harddrive installed.
As a matter of fact, they will wipe it out with the restore cd immediately upon arrival.
I would make use of the external HD - and make a ghost image backup of your current configuration before sending it in for repairs.
Be very specific about your issue- I truly beleive it is more widespread (bad usb controllers) than people think since many folks never tried using a USB 2 Hub with their units.

Are the 7405's effected as well? Is it a bios thing?

I don't know about the 7405's.
It's not bios since mine was updated and I still have prob's.
I have a Belkin 7 port HUB, and a Built in 4 port hub in my Cooler pad (both USB 2.0) and I have issues when using either.
The funny thing is that the few times it did work, I daisy chained the HUBS (plugged one into the other).

I concur with ZeroTolerance. I have the same Belkin USB2.0 hub and could not use it with 3 different M6811s. A USB 1.1 hub works perfectly, or USB 2.0 devices plugged directly into the laptop.

I have had two different m6811s pF07 and two with PF08 (don't ask) and in each case one worked and one did not. The one that did not work worked for awhile then stopped working in both cases. It is not BIOS.

The numbers don't add up because one of the M6811s had the motherboard upgraded and BIOS Changed from PF07 to PF08.

How about a externally powered USB 2.0 hub? I have a 1.1 that has a ac power adapter. Forget going portable, but will it work?
The Belkin 7 port USB 2.0 hub is externally powered.

Wow, that is very odd. How could this be? If externally powered, then why would this happen?

Secondly, with 4 usb's on the laptop, why would ya need a hub? Stupid question I know...............................

I use my hub in a similar fasion as syarost- sort of a docking station.
I've got external HD's for video editing, wireless mouse, keyboard, etc..
Of course i have an external DVD burner since the 6805 doesn't
I'd be interested if other find this problem if/when they try an external 2.0 hub.

This may sound crazy but I have discovered that if I reboot my Laptop after it has been running for a couple of hours I can re-create the problem of it not detecting the devices. If I shut it off and let the Laptop cool for several hours I dont have a problem. Does this make sense?

I generally do not have a problem with the USB 2.0 hub.

One last question. I have been reading some of the posts regarding how hot the little power brick gets. Since my Laptop almost never gets unplugged from the wall could I simply remove the battery from it thereby reducing the load on the powersupply?

I can do the same with the hub issue

i am using a belkin 4 port hub fine...no prob

I had a USB 1.1 hub that I used without any problems. I replaced it with a Kensington USB 2.0 hub (7 port), everything runs fine except for external harddrives. (I am using a 7405gx)

I taught it is normal since those drives usually require to be on the bus itself. Also I noticed that connecting a wireless mouse to hub causes a lot of activitiy on it (polling maybe?). When a mouse is connected I have various connection issues to several devices at random times, when I disconnect the mouse everything is back to normal

You shouldn't be having those probs
