Seeking Help: New to Notebooks / Video Editing

Thread Starter
Hi, I am new to this site and seeking any and all information on notebooks and brands.
I want to get into video editing for home use and printing and copying home movies and pictures to DVD.
I would like a 17 " Screen
Need alot of hard drive, at least 80 GB or more.
I don't know if speed matters, but I assume it does.
I don't want to link this the internet, just want everything I need in the unit.

Can anyone help me, since I have no idea on brands, except my dell computer at home. And do not know what to look for in a notebook that I would need for the video editing that I would love to learn to do.

Thank you, sorry for a lot of questions, but don't have any idea.

The main reason to get a 17" inch notebook is the screen, not surprisingly. SO this should be the best screen possible. IMHO, that means one of the new enhanced high contrast glossy screens (Xbrite/BrightView/Trubrite etc), in a resolution better than XGA.

The best screen is found on the Sony A series notebooks. It is a WUXGA screen. As an all around notebook, the A series are very nice. The battery lasts for a reasonable amount of time, they are quite fast, built very well and look good. They are expensive unless you buy one of the sale ones on the Sony site.

However, if you get seriously in video editing and encoding, you may want the extra power of a Pentium Four laptop such as the HP ZD8000. It has a WSXGA screen which is also nice, if not as good as the Sony. But for video work it would probably be a bit faster.

Your other choice would be one of the Sagers, such as the 4790 to save money, or the 9860 if you want to go all out. This is a big beast of a machien with the best of everything and has two hard drives. It's make an ideal video editing machine, but it is a big expensive mofo.

Any of these would do the job just fine.

Steve
