Nero data DVD speed problem... 2x burns faster than 4x?!

So I have an 8x DVD+/-R burner in my Dell M60 laptop. The problem is that if I choose to burn my discs at anything faster than 2x (Discs are 4x), they actually end up burning slower than they would have if I had just left it at 2x. I keep noticing that the cache and buffer meters are jumping all over the place. For reference, I am burning these off of my firewire 7200rpm external drive, but even copying them to my laptop's internal 7200rpm drive doesn't make a difference. I'm using Nero and am fairly pissed off at the moment since I am trying to back up a lot of data. Any ideas?

Have you tried defragging both drives? I have heard that if your drives are very fragmented you can get the symptoms you are describing (cache and buffer meters jumping all over the place).

1)Make sure your version of Nero is fully supported of this drive.
2)Make sure you have DMA enabled. http://www.real-knowledge.com/dma.htm http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/DMA.htm
