They will send you an offer. They will also call. They called me a few times, did not leave a callback number. When I finally answered, I was placed on hold for 30 seconds while they routed the call to India to sell me the warranty. WTF, put me on hold to try to sell me something, but I took the call, since I was interested, but I couldn't understand her. It got so bad with numbers, undertsanding nineteen versus ninety that I finally said, e-mail me a quote. I was also told the warranty is valid world wide. If you are travelling, they will send a tech.

Just get like one year of accidental damge warranty, I think that is the most you'll need

I don't buy a new cell phone each year. Besides, I wouldn't want to have to load all my junk (apps, games, patches, configurations, etc) on a new laptop and going thru the hassle of selling it each year. I plan to use my 8100 for backoffice stuff (downloading/uploading, ripping media, burning CDs, DVDs, etc) anyway. I wouldn't really compare laptops and cellphones anyway. Lastly, to be accurate, you are leaving out monthly internet charge for laptop (since you mentioned cell service).

i just got the mail in warranty for 3 years on my 700m. Say they come to fix your laptop @ your home and they can't fix it, then they have to send it in anyways. But if you send it in when it's broken it usually comes back pretty damn quick. they send UPS or fedex to pick it up then they will deliver it to you when it's fixed. so you don't have to pay for shipping or you don't have to take it up to UPS or Fedex. the 3 year warranty mail in is only $169 compared to the 3 year @ home that is $269, so i don't think it's worth it for a $100

Alright, FearNo1. I'll stop bugging you to buy a new laptop each year For some people (like me), buying new stuff is the drug of choice. But you're wise to hold onto your trusty rig. In fact, you might consider dumping the cell phone too. If you put that $50/mo or so into the stock market, you should have about $180,000 saved after 40 years. And then you can buy a new laptop, and throw it on the seat of your new Ferrari

Alright, thanks. I'll probably go with the 3 year mail-in warranty then. Now I have to decide if the Complete Care add-on is worth the extra $100.

I sell computers and other electronics at Staples, and normally I don't buy extended warranties, but in all honesty I would never chance it with a laptop. I just got the three year mail-in service, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Hell, even read editors notes on Consumer Reports where they state that extended warranties on laptops are probably one of the only worthy objects to buy them for. (and cars)

I imagine not unless you are always at home. If I were to buy an extended warranty (and I wouldn't) I would prefer to ship it back to Dell at their expense than have them to come to my house since Dell's repair reps prob have a limited crew after 6pm.

Here's a question. Is the 3 year at-home warranty worth the extra cost over the 3 year mail-in warranty?
