Hey Guys...I am thinking of selling my Area-51m and was wondering how much I could get for it on ebay...the main specs are:

Area-51m Saucer Silver
16.1" UXGA Screen with no Dead Pixels
3.2GHz Pentium 4 with HT
1GB PC3200 DDR RAM
60GB Hitachi 7200rpm HD
128mb ATI 9600 Pro
2X DVD-RW
Internal Wireless A/B/G
Never Worn Before Alienware T-Shirt
Alienware Mousepad

PLUS I WANT TO THROW IN THE PACKAGE:
1 Antec Notebook Cooler
1 Microsoft Optical Notebook Mouse Silver
Battlefield 1942
Splinter Cell
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Mafia
Metal Gear Solid
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Game)
Freedom Fighters

I should also add that the system is in immaculate condition and has 0 dings, scratches, or dents. It looks like it is factory new...thanks for the help guys!

Considering at times Alienware sells refurbished laptops in the $1900 range with a warranty I would say $1500, people like to get a deal. You may be better off to sell the games separately.
I'd say in the neighborhood of $2000.00-$2200.00

It's still a very capable laptop. People will probably nitpick that the GPU is only a 9600 and that the DVD drive is only 2x...

Have you given up on AW and their GPU upgrade promises?

I have given up on AW and hope to get perhaps $2500 for the whole package...heck I'll even throw in the targus backpack I bought for it...anyone else who wants to chime in please do so...I will also let everyone know if and when I post the item on eBay for anyone interested...

PS: Most of the refurb systems that go for $1900 do not have the 16.1" UXGA screen which was $500-600 option!
I believe the uxga screen is no longer offered regardless of size. I guess your laptop is only worth what someone is willing to pay and that could be anything. Put it on ebay and see what happens.

Edit: Area-51m 5500 starts about $2100 and the new Area-51m 7700 is $2300 plus $140 for 17" WideSXGA+ 1680 x 1050 LCD Display with Built-in Camera - Includes Clearview Enhanced Display Technology

I don't think you will see the price level to reach that high since a lot of eBayers are suspicious when it comes to Alienware being sold through Ebay. The market for AW on eBay is pretty dry and no one who's financially conscious will help drive the price up. One month to two months ago, you might have a chance... but with the introduction of the 7700, the demand for the 5500 is meek at best. However... it doesn't hurt to try, Good Luck!

...doesn't sound promising! Although, I have seen a couple of 15.4" AW lappies reaching about $1500 with a few days left...those lappies do not even have a DVD-RW, the 16.1" screen, 1GB of RAM, the 60GB 7200rpm HD, or all the other bonus stuff I am willing to part with...but then again they have the 9700 so who knows...I guess there is only one way to find out...$2500 is probably going to be my reserve and then cross my fingers from there!

Start it off at $1.00, reserve $2500.00, and buy it now $2501.00
post #9 of 32
Yeah but most ebayers might not catch the differences in the specs. Some will, but not all and may not realize that in the price bidding. Good luck though.

..very true...I guess I will have to emphasize those points...

NB,
I got $1900 for mine...I had the same setup minus the DVDr. Set the first bid at $2000 and let it go with no reserve. And link to this site so people can see your history here. good luck!

The formaldhyde smell might scare some people off.

Thanks Craig...I will do just that...and DB you might be right!!! Thanks a lot guys...

I saw one go for 2300 on ebay not to long ago and the only difference was that it had no DVDr so I think it is mos def a possibility. You just have to find the right person. I would give it a shot, good luck.

Thanks Game33 and welcome to the forum!

Most people on e-bay don't like high starting bids. Its a phycological thing, they have to work themselves up to paying that much money through bidding. I'd suggest starting the bidding low, and setting your reserve for whatever you think your willing to part with it for. If you can't bear to part with it for less than 2500, then thats your reserve, but if you would feel alright about selling it for 2K and just want 2500, set your reserve for 2K.

Do yourself a favor, and look at how the regular laptop resellers on E-bay describe thier products, and emulate them, there are formulas for successfull sales, and they know them.

Awesome advice...thanks!

Not sure I agree...no one really uses reserves anymore. They're more of a deterent than a high opening bid. Just my thoughts...but look at the way people are posting auctions and see for yourself.

The No Reserve tag gets more attention than a $1 bid on a $2000 reserve.

set the starting bid at 300$, then bid on it yourself to 2200 and it wont rise untill challenged and then you can put a NR on it

That's called shill bidding (whether you do it yourself or have someone else do it for you) and it's illegal on ebay.

I'm not certain which is the less expensive way to go:

1. low starting bid with reserve
2. $2000.00 starting bid with no reserve

You should check this out and the one thing I recommend is using Buy It Now. I think it's only $0.10 but if you get the one person dying for a 16.1" LCD, it's a big time saver.
