Locks

Thread Starter
After just placing my order on the 8th, I now realize I will have to figure out a way to secure my new investment since i will be taking it to college. What locks do any of you guys prefer? Any input and links would be helpful.

The 8890 has a standard Kensington lock port, so you can buy an Kensington lock, and lock your laptop to a table or something. Check out this: http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?src=PW&item=35167

I've got just the bad boy for you:

It even has a $3000 USD warranty in case someone DOES steal your laptop (By cutting the laptop in two to get the laptop off the lock, not the lock off the laptop ) It is virtually unbreakable, especially if you only leave the laptop unattended for a few minutes at a time (max). It may be expensive, it may be heavy, it may be BIG and not exactly legal on an airport, but check it out! (Also usefull for beating would-be muggers senseless!) It is NYC tested and approved, how's that for confidence?

Doggonit.out.

P.S.: Carry this in one hand and the laptop in the other hand will get you HUGE muscles in no time. Chicks WILL dig both laptop and the muscles. No steroids needed!

A word to the wise...

If you purchase a numeric combination lock, make sure you choose a combination other than 1-2-3-4. At an office I use to work, a notebook was stolen from a work's desk. It occurred during the middle of the work day. The theif came in from the freight elevator and did a loop around the office and stole the notebook.

dogg, nice luck but you would never be able to tie it to your laptop. Its just a thick chain. I was looking into the same thing myself as I will be living on campus in a couple years. I dont need a $3000 laptop stolen from me

The big Dogg chain

They have a Kryptonite lock for laptops. It comes in 5mm and 8 mm thicknesses. They are around somewhere, I closed the window from the site I was looking at. Just check with the suppliers that are on the Kryptonite webpage.

In my experience, as long as you are overly protective of your laptop, it will not be stolen. I've had mine for two years and I leave it only in spots I know I can trust and have only used the lock I bought once.

I personally would get the Notebook Guardian from PC Guardian. It's supposedly and excellent lock, and in tests where they attempted to break the lock it took upwards of 15 minutes to cut through it, which is pretty good for a notebook lock. I think it also won several awards from Secure Computing Magazine. It's around 35-45bucks, if I'm not mistaken.

Would a Targus lock work with the 8890? I've had my eye on the Defcon 1 Ultra. http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=CQ400U It has a 4 digit combination lock and a 95 decibal alarm. The alarm is triggered whenever the cable is severed or the motion sensor is activated.
