Uniwill 259IA or Uniwill 258KA0? Opinions?

Hi Everyone:

Thanks for all the help with assisting me with trying to decide on a laptop. I have narrowed it down between the Uniwill 259IA (Centrino) or Uniwill 258KA0 (AMD) models.

I would like to know what you think about the following:

Which one would perform better for an equal combination of business applications (such as Adobe Photoshop and occassional video rendering) and high-intensive games (such as Doom 3 and CS:Source)?

Speaking of games, since the 259IA is a Centrino and has the Radeon 9700 w/ 256MB VR, would it last nearly two or three years, so I can get the most out of it without having to buy a new laptop to play games? Or since it is a lower processor, would it be quickly outdated?

Finally, would the AMD be a better bet with a 3400 processor and 64 bit technology?

Thanks!

Hmmm, I'm not sure if this helps at all but have you checked out the Sager NP3790? Very close to 259IA but the Sager is very well built and proven while the Uniwill lacks number of reviews/users. Prices are very close too, and Sager has good support. The Uniwill supposedly has significant bottlenecks that make it less powerful than it's specs show. And the one thing that confuses the hell out of me is that it's dimensions are listed as 12.1" x 10" x .9/1.4"... which is very nice if true but... how do they fit a 15.4 widescreen in 12.1 x 10??? I don't think it's possible for anything larger than a standard 14" LCD!

I thought the same thing about the screen. Try the Pythagorean Theorem. You will see that it is possible.

I agree with ling

10.2^2 + 12.1^2 = C^2

C = 15.825"

Which means that there is not so much wasted screen like the 3790.

In general if you care about battery life pick the Uniwill 259IA (Centrino). If you care for a little bit more performance and some future proof with the processor then get the Uniwill 258KA0.

Both these notebooks will have the same gameing life since the GPU will become outdated before your CPU does.

The ATI 9700 is a very good mobile GPU. It's able to play today's current games at decent settings. But future games based off the Doom3 and HL2 engins will push it to it's limits.

As far as 128 Meg ATI 9700 vs 256 Meg ATI 9700 goes, there is minimal performance increase between the two. This is because of the GPU's limitation to process information buffered in the memory isn't fast enough.

If you take a close look at product shots, you'll see that the screen doesn't stretch to the edges any more than the screen does on the 3790. The gap between the screen and edges of the case are about the same in proportion. So the screen must be smaller or they lied.

Take a look:

Actually, I think you posted somewhere that you purchased the Uniwill, Ling. So is it really the size it claims to be? Is it as small as a compact 14" notebook but with a 15.4" widescreen?
It all boils down to one thing, the processor. The form factor between the two laptops you've asked about are pretty much the same. They are both manufactor by Uniwill and both offer 15.4" WSXGA. Eventhough one is ATI 9700 128MB and the other is ATI 9700 256MB, the performance in gaming between the two is very mininmal differences.

The actual performance boils down between to either get the Pentium-M or go with AMD 64. The other thing to consider is the weight between the two is approx 1lb differences.

Otherwise, feature wise, pretty much the same.

One thing to consider though, the 258 series offer one thing the 259 series doesn't offer. A few places offer custom paint job on the 258 series and not the 259 series.
Why is that? I will get my 259 this evening, but is there something about the material of the case or the construction that precludes some of the shops from offering a custom paint job? I noticed the same thing and have been surprised.
I think it is more around them being able to cleaning remove all the components (board, chip, HD, etc) and be left with just straight chassis to do the custom paint job.

From my gather, they will be offering it as soon as they are able to accomplish this.

Ok,

About the size, I had not thought about it until mentioned and it does seem small for a 15.4" screen. I called RJtech and the guy went to measure one and he said that it is 14"+. The other measurements he said were fine.

I have one, (uniwill 259IA) and yes its 14" wide.

New Question...

Will the new AMD Centrino-like chip be affordable or will it be very expensive when it first hits the market?

In other words, should I wait two months for the new chips to hit the market? Thanks.

Why dony you give us a review or some impressions of this machine. There has only been 1 review posted on this lappy. More info would be much appreciated.

Of the bat where did you get it from and what battery does it have (6, 8 or 9 cell) how much does it last both in regular use and demanding.

Hope you can inlighten us with some more onfo on this machine.

Uniwill 2591A screen size

I noticed Uniwill and RJ Tech list it as being 14.1" wide. Ibuypower lists 12.1". I think it's just a typo.
There are another uniwill model that is a 12.1 screen. You might be confused with it.

The 259IA is 15.4 wide screen

The 245II0 looks like the 259IA, but only 14.1 screen

Same with the 223IIO, except this one is a 12.1 screen

What is sad is that, I haven't seen anyone of those place, cyberpower system, Ibuypower, RJTech, etc offer the low power AMD Mobile version.

slightly lower spec than mine (3000 vs 3200 and 5400rpm vs 7200rpm) but over-all not a bad buy
