Hitachi hard drive or Toshiba?

Thread Starter
I'm debating which hard drive to choose from. The options are:

Hitachi 40GB 5400 RPM 8MB Buffer Model HTS548040M9AT00

or Toshiba 40GB 5400RPM 16MB MK4026GAX.

Any recommendations please? Which one is better, or quiter and less heat?

Maybe you should consider seagate and western digital also. I read a review that western digital is the quietest.

I would look into a 7200 RPM drive if your going to upgrade (Hitachi is the only option for 7200 RPM)

Otherwise go with the 16 MB cache toshiba if you go 5400 RPM.

to save your sanity i would not recomend the hitachi HD....hitachi has a huge problem where the read/write heads keep turning on and off...now this causes a HUGE annoyance in the fact that you will hear a tick tick tick tick all the time if your just doing like net surfing or word. It absouletly drives me nuts and i just have to play a CD on my 8600 just so i wont hear it. This is a known problem with the hitachi's, so there have been reports o fit. Oh yeah, one more thing, the updated firmware for the HDD will not fix the clicking noise eventhough it says it was suppose to. I have a 30gig hitachi

good luck

I have two Hitachi's (5k80 - 30Gb@5400rpm & 7k60 - 60Gb@7200 rpm) and neither has the clicking problem. Also, for those who have it, there is a Dell download to fix it.

Hello, where is the fix, please?

Thank you in advance.

Here

If you search the Dell Support website for Downloads->IDE/EIDE for the i8600, you will find the updated firmware for the other Hitachi's as well. My Hitachi did not have the problem but Underoath said that the firmware update did not work for him. Don't know if he got the update from Dell or elsewhere.

dumb question: how do you install the patch?

As for the choice over the toshiba or the hitachi, I would say get the toshiba. I'm thinking that the 16mb cache will be faster then a 7200rpm drive. i know when I got my 8mb cache drive over my 2mb cache drive, I noticed a HUGE speed increase. I would honestly go with the toshiba if it were me (plus its cheaper, but it may only be in the 60gb model on the price difference...)

Click the link and then click on the patch link that appears on the Dell page for directions on how to install it.

horatiub was asking between two 5400rpm models. AFAIK, the Hitachi 7k60 is the fastest notebook hard-drive currently in the market, based on several hardware reviews, benchmarks and tests. If they have come out with something faster since I last checked, it certainly won't be a 5400 rpm model. The difference is appreciable in boot time and load times for big applications like games. Unless you've tried the 7k60, it is hard to appreciate its speed.

Thx for link skifiend,

I just tried to apply the fix, but the software told me no updates needed; i have an inspiron 9200, and it seems patched last firmware, but the "click efect" keeps.

How about a Fujitusu MHT2060AH hard drive? It's a 60GB 5400RPM. It's the first notebook hard drive that I have never heard make any noise. No clicking noises or anything. Seems pretty fast to me although i've never had a Hitatchi. I had a Toshiba in my i8600 and it seemed to load programs very slowly.

This only happens with the 80 gig 5400 rpm Hitachi drive and it only happens ocasionally. I have a Thinkpad with this drive and I've only heard it 4-5 times in the two months that I've had this computer. Let's put it this way. It better be pretty damn quite or you won't hear it at all. In a dead silence, it's barely audible and I have excellent hearing.

I just installed a Seagate ST960822A 60GB/5400RPM as an external HDD staorage. Transfer rate 20.6MB/sec, runs silent, awesome!

Folks with the hard-drive clicking problem, this topic has been covered well in the past. Here is one recent thread.
i know its been covered all around, but im saying that its not just a 60gig hitachi drive that clicks. if you search around this site you will see a range from 30-60 gig HDD that clicks.
oh and one more thing: the dell site does not have a firmware update for the 30 gig hitachi, so i am unfortanlly out of luck

Sorry to hear of your bad experience but as I said earlier, neither of my Hitachi drives have had this problem. It appears that others who have had this problem have resolved it as described in their postings.

Not a big deal, but how did you know that the clicking noise is not fixed by the updated firmware when you could not find it on the Dell web-site?

Hey SubWolfer what external device are you backing up to?

I just got a USB 2.0 external HD case and put in a Hitatchi 7200rpm 60Gb hd (same as my 8600). Can't get Ghost 2003 to work with it.

What do you use? Any idea's on my problem?

Cheers
