Hitachi hard drive or Toshiba? - Page 2

Noob, I used the I-ROCKS IR9200 USB, awesome lookin' lighted side-lid, though does require both USB connections.
I just use it as an extra storage, haven't cloned any drive yet!

ive been looking around on the forums about the clicking and everyone that has the hitachi clicking noise "says" the firmware update doesnt work.

but there is a program called feature tool i think and what you do is make a bootable cd and hit F12 upon bootup and change some settings, and people have stated that there clicking is completly gone or is alot less frequent. i have no idea on how to do this, because i have no clue on how to make a bootable cd.

ok, let me share with you what I have found out. I tested both hard drives on two 700m with identical configuration, and both of the hard drives were formated and loaded with the same software. So, here is what I found out: the Toshiba 40gb 5400RPM 16MB cache was a second faster in booting up and shuting down, but when I tried to transfer a 600MB file from the C drive to D partition, I noticed that the Hitachi hard drive transfered the file about a minut faster, it took about a minute for the Hitachi and at least 2 min for Toshiba hard drive.

To be honest, I can' explain why is this, but those are the facts.

Interesting. Thanks for posting your findings.

I had a 5400 60GB Toshiba and a 60GB 7200 hitachi. The Hitachi was noticeably faster even though it has half the cache. I ran HDTach, and the Hitachi was faster across the board. The avg read on the Hitachi was about 31.3MB/s and the Toshiba was 27MB/s. But the burst on the Hitachi was 94.1Mb/s! while the Toshiba could only burst at 38MB/s.

Here are the details.

Name Avg Read Burst Random Access
Toshiba 27MB/s 38MB/s 17.1ms
Hitachi 31.3MB/s 94.1MB/s 15.3ms

I have pictures of the HDTach of both drives, but it's alot of trouble to attach them. If enough people want to see them, then I will repost with the pictures.

FYI, Newegg has the Hitachi refurb for about $116, I think.

Makes sense. Copying the larger file exceeds the 16mb cache provided by the Toshiba drive, so your bottleneck becomes the drive's actual data throughput speed. The Hitachi is faster in this regard due to its faster spin rate.

The larger buffer on the toshiba drive means that you'd have a better 'hit rate' in the cache so the drive wouldn't have to physically pull data from the platters as much as the 8mb cache Hitachi. When the drives had to pull data from the platters, the Hitachi would be faster.

Real world performance would depend on how you use the computer. If you're accessing the same files over and over, and those files are smaller than 16mb, the Toshiba will perform well. If you're more random in your file usage, or if the files you access often are larger than 16mb, then the Hitachi will likely perform better.

hey guys thanks for the info, but can you clarify one thing: "But the burst on the Hitachi was 94.1Mb/s! while the Toshiba could only burst at 38MB/s. "

what do you mean by burst? the higher the burst number the better or the other way around?
