What advertising are you seeing that said we would be able to self-upgrade the videocard? One of the benefits of PCI-E *WAS* suppose to allow that, but i never heard that the 9860 was using MXM... which i guess it doesn't, since it's now capable of ATI based cards.

Personally, I would not "upgrade" my nvidia 6800go for x800. The benefit does not outweight the cost. For one, the $400 some dollars is too much for a minor upgrade. Another thing is, you would have to send the laptop back. Who knows you might get a scratch or two when you got you it back.

That said, I would rather stick with 6800go until the next big upgrade. If it doesn't break, why fix it.

I could have sworn that I saw that somewhere, but now I can't seem to find it. Does anyone else recall this as being a specified feature? In any event, I am happy with the 6800 right now. I am only looking to the future and wondering what the ramifications are. I also wonder why it seems that there is a shift to the X800 from the 6800. Is it deemed by Sager to be that superior?

Which advertising? All I have seen around here is just "modular", "removable", and maybe even "upgradable". Show us this advertising please.

Edit - Was typing this before you had posted the post above. Sorry.

Maybe you are confusing it with the alienware advertisements? They are the ones always saying that the A51-m is user upgradable.

No, not necessarily. Sager is just offering the newest chip out there in the market. If there is a new Nvidia model coming out in a couple of months, surely Sager will offer it too...or at least I hope they will

I've been trying to decide what card to get....my order is currently on hold. I'll be using the machine for cad and rendering in max and maya primarily, but will play the occasional game; ok prolly more than occasionally.

It seems impossible to find any reviews that include workstation type tests for these gaming vid cards. Does anyone know of any comparisons that might help? I know that nvidia's workstation cards perform better than ati's, but that in and of itself doesnt tell me anything about the performance of these two cards...or does it?

Another consideration is whether I would even notice the difference in performance.

Hmmm..now you guys are making me wonder if I should get ATI (which has always had better moble graphics) Or ask to keep the Nvidia when my notebooks is replaced. I hope Adam hurry's and does the review, I need to see if it makes the notebook any hotter... heat kills performance so if the ATI heats up the notebook more then it already is.. I'll stick with Nvidia.. The card to get in my opinion will be Nvidia's next card after the 6800go..my plan had been to skip the x800 and wait for that card..but now that i can get it anyway I was considering... hmmm..choices..
yes, choices are a bi*tch. the only thing they lead to are decisions, and who needs those? After all, decisions only produce actions. Actions are where it's at, so just skip the other crap and get to the action. Point of this post? none. Find it hard to follow? Good.

I suspect that the redesign that were accomplished for the new cases would help with heat dispursion for either model GPU. Is you replacement machine going have the new or old case? SUspect no one knows until you receive it. Might ask for the x800 machine if you can get it at the same cost. That way you will be covered for future upgrades - IMHO.

I agree with G, Syn. Also, I am sure a lot of people here are going to have some 6800s just laying around and you could just buy one off of them.

For going on 5 years now the Nvidia's have been mopping the floor with Ati in workstation apps. Not just in terms of real world framerates but in terms of stability and image accuracy (ati = terrible overlay handling = virtually unusable artisan brushes and huge framerate drops in wireframe-on-shaded modes). This holds true for the 2 company's gaming cards as well as their workstations. Ive been using my 6800go in Maya for over a month now without noticing a single glitch. and my framerates in the 3d-test are amazing.

So until Wildcat comes up with a mobile gpu, the choice for cad/cam is still:
Nvidia, Nvidia, Nvidia.

Thanks for the response Jethro. I guess now I'll see if its possible to still get the 6800....it'd be damned ironic if i'm unable to since i put the system on hold partly for the x800. i just...couldn't....shut..out....the........HYPE.
Jethro thats in server apps and desktops yes i've always been big on Nvidia.. but Moble..sorry ATI has always been miles ahead in moble solutions. Not to say the 6800go isn't a bad come back for them..Its a great card.. I also agree to a point that on rendering somethings here and there i've gotten a few quirks out of ATI..but the over all performance of it makes a quirk here and there acceptable..atleast to me..

G as always I agree with you for some reason heh. I am sending this one back for that very issue.. HEAT something I didn't have in the last notebook before the screen replacement.. Im hoping 3rd times the charm because I dont want to send it back again.. I truly hate my CRT..makes me feel I need glasses..looks fuzzy to me after being on this LCD.. but yes if the 9860 has now been modified..maybe ATI is the way to go for me..less heat the better..

I did read a while back that the ATI card shuts down whatever parts of the card isn't being used to save power and produce less heat.. this was long ago so who knows something may have changed.. Once Adam does his review i'll have a better idea of what to tell Sager when they get my notebook next week.

Ok I'll get the x800!

Just kidding. But it really does illustrate my point that it'd be very helpful to publish some cad/cam results when testing these cards.

I'll have to make up my mind on the card this weekend so I can get this order shipped already.

By the way....speaking of shipping...I'm an american currently living in europe. Anyway my aunt was supposed to come visit and bring me this laptop sometime next week. It turns out her trip was cancelled. So one would think, ok i'll have it sent, but it turns out that due to shipping costs and VAT here in denmark (25%) its going to be cheaper for me to fly home pick it up and fly back. Absurd but true.
What about having your aunt ship it to you labeled as "gift"? Used to work in UK to avoid the VAT.
There's a good chance they'd catch it regardless. A couple years ago I had one of my computers shipped to me here. It was labeled 'moving items' in the customs forms. The box was also wrapped up in brown paper to make it a little more discrete. When I finally got it, I also got a letter telling me that I needed to pay the customs toll of 25% on the item. I ended up having to provide them with a bill of sale from 3 years prior to prove I had owned it for more than 6 months.

They open up a lot of the packages that come in....especially the big heavy ones.

Plus this way I get to go hang out with all my good friends in new york city for the week.

Hey Syn, I must of missed a post about the heat issue and your notebook. Would you mind restating the problem?

I just wonder b/c mine runs around 53 to 54 C on daily activities (it actually go to 62 yesterday) and when running games it will go up to 66-67, but averages 63.
I want to know what the cost would be just to get the modifications, and not get the X800. I'd want the modifications, but I'd want to wait until later to purchase the X800, or even the next line of VCs.

Luke, Will people who want to install future GFX modules be able to order them from PCT?
What I mean is, will PCT be able to sell just the GFX modules to the Public?

Thnx
