My NP4760 Review.........

Thread Starter
Well I finally got my 4760 on Sat. I had to Chase down the Frigon UPS guy. I paid for overnight so I was patiently waiting for my laptop, I checked UPS.com to see the tracking and it said "Rescheduled: Buisness Closed" . I was SO PISSED that I took off and hunted for him. I took a chance and went to the loca UPS office which was closed and i caught him getting ready to leave. He had the package inside and gave it to me. I was so happy.

Anyway. I love this laptop . I never heard to much in the forums praising it. The screen is Georgous, it runs flawlessly, i have played counter strike, day of defet, battlefiled 1942, and GTA3. The graphics card (ATI9000 64 meg M-9) looks better them my frigon Geforce4 4200TI 128 Meg that is in my desktop. I could not belive it. And as far as some of you saying there is ghosting...NOT HERE. I dont know what you were looking at but I dont see it.

A few of you BASHED the speakers. Unless I have been hiding for the last 10 years these Speakers are GREAT. I have never heard such good quiality come out of laptop speakers. I had to turn down my game once becasue it was TOO LOUD. And the sufwoofer DOES make a difference..... Any way i have another 512 ram coming today so i will have a GIG, so it will run that much better.

Do alot of you tweak the video card or jsut leave defaults? i have dont nothing yet? let me know....

4760 mini-review

I got my 4760, and its great. I love the screen, wider and shorter than my 19 inch but seems about the same area. The Sound is REALLY good for a laptop, im listening to a DVD with it right now and it sounds great. I would reccomend some add on speakers if your serious about dvds, games and music though. However, if you want to be able to have good sound and still be mobile, the 4760 is definiteley right for you. The DVD showing in adams review is a little misleading, as it shows it filling up almost the whole screen. In 1.85:1 mode (standard widescreen for most dvd's), there is about a 1 inch gap on the top and bottom. It still looks great though. In terms of the software coming with it, well i was a little dissapointed, i would have rather had the full version of nero than express, but its alright i guess. Also i believe powerdvd is better than windvd but thats just my opinion. The Keyboard is really great, i love the full keyboard. The overall Design of the case is really good looking, i love the silver/black color combination. On top of all this, you can get it real cheap. I got a 2.4 ghz, 512 ram, 40gig 5400 hard drive for $1712, plus shipping. It really is a steal considering all the features you get. All i can say BUY IT!

Thanks for the response. I love that price, but I am wondering how is the speed. I was going to go for the 3.06, 1024, and 60 gig at 7200. Is it worth another 600 to get these upgrades. I am just asking your personal opinion. I watch a lot of DVDs, use a lappy as a Navigations System in my Caddy, and edit MPEG-2 files. As well as some coding in normal languages. No gaming yet, but I may get Final Fantasy XI. I can use my Alienware for that though. Thanks.

What kind of battery life are you getting? Does it run hot?

What kind of battery life are you getting? Does it run hot?

battery is not running that long..around 1.15 hr as expected..o well, i wish they could upgrade tht point to at least 2.5 hrs...

the fan is kicking from time to time and i m kinda guetting used to the fan noise altough loud to my ears...

when you spent so much time on this forum you tried to imaging some really hard concept like "how hot does it get"..and i was worried about that too..but when i got it i was surprised to say the least.. it is not that hot especially when you know you have a full desktop P4 3.06 inside..the design of the laptop is really good..those guys at Clevo knows what they are doing...the keyboard gets warm thats all.the touchpad is slightly hotter that the keyboard especially just above it just before the keys..but the space bar is cool..like the reste of the keys...

i believe the design will stay around for a good while.. although the centrino type cpu is not as fast as the fastest desktop cpu..well you know how fast technology advance so the 46xxx is the way to go for Sager for a while... i predict in future model they will ditch the floppy drive and give you the option for a 2nd internal HD...

Yes the fan does kick in every once in a while, depending on how heavy of usage probably around every 10 minutes or so. Its not really that bad, and doesnt ever last more than a minute or two. In terms of getting hot, no the top of the laptop never gets hot at all, the bottom on the other hand is a different story, i had it sitting on my lap for a while and it got to be pretty hot. It was only hot when i touched it with my bare hand though, with it on my lap it didnt feel too bad, just a little warm. I havent gamed too much on it, a little counterstrike and everything plays great on that. Im not too much of a gamer, just a little bit here and there, i mainly chose the 4760 because of the nice screen and sound, because i listen to alot of mp3's and watch DVD's. In terms of speed, my setup (2.4, 512, 40gb 5400) is plenty fast for what i do. Really the bottom line is youre not going to get the ultimate out of the 4760, or any laptop for that matter. Youre going to be outdated in a couple of months anyway. In my opinion, the best thing to do is just buy it for what you need right now. Watch a lot of DVD's? The widescreen on the 4760 is amazing. Like a big screen in general for gaming, apps etc...same deal. Another thing I want to mention is too not try to anticipate your needs, unless you KNOW you are going to need it. For example, with bluetooth i was thinking, okay i COULD buy a bluetooth mouse in the future, but do i need it right now? Keep in mind that laptops arent as un-upgradeable as you might think, you arent just "stuck" with your purchase. You can upgrade the hard drive, add on an external dvd burner, and there are tons of PCMIA cards to add on that will give you bluetooth, wireless, extra ports etc. Well sorry about the long winded post, just trying to pass on my experiences to future buyers.

hey kered you definatley want to tweak the ini file for games to allow the widescreen; 1440x900 resolution.

If you need help just ask me how to get your favorite game running in 1440x900 resolution

quick over view:
UT: native support, no ini tweaking needed
Ut2003 (And any game that uses the unreal warface engine): edit the ut2003.ini , change res to 1440x900
WarCraft3: run regedit, go to warcraft3 registery entry, settings then change it to 1440x900
Quake 3 (and any game that uses the quake 3 engine ): edit the q3confgi.cfg change r_customhieght to 900 and r_customwidth tp 1440, then change r_mode to -1
Gta3/midnight club 2: go to dir, userdate and edit the ini file, change res to 1440x900
C&C games, same thing edit ini file, generasls puts the ini file in your my documents folder.

well basically thats it, all you gotta do is edit the .ini file or registry entry and pretty much ANY game will run in 1440x900 widescreen resolution
