3790 to loud!

First impressions when I got the thing out of the box... amazed.

Left the thing on for about 5 minutes... then I heard the fan... thought it would only be on for a little bit like most notebooks.... this thing stays on and comes on and on very often...

This is the only thing that I dont like about this notebook, and is the reason why I am going to send it back at the end of the weekend in favor of something quieter.. I wish I did my research, I gotta go back to school in about a week and need a replacement asap.

Personally I've found it to be about normal for a laptop. It's quieter than my dell and HP, but noisier than my compaq. Then again, the Compaq was one of the quietest laptops I ever had (I've had around a dozen different ones).

But of course each laptop will be slightly different and each user has different thresholds.

Best of luck finding a laptop that suits you better.

How often does yours come on?... I think I may have over reacted.

Hmm...I forgot how often mine comes on but it's once every 5-10 minutes or so? I'm not sure but it doesn't really bother me. I sleep through it just fine and I've heard laptops that are way louder than this.

Mine hardly comes on at all in light use. I've been playing the Guild Wars beta this weekend and during that it comes on frequently. Still the noise when it is on is easily eclipsed by the sound of my son's Toshiba lappie, the aquarium, etc.. If I pay attemtion to it, I can hear it, but otherwise it's really not noticeable.

My desktop on the other hand....

Krowa02, if you do return your Sager 3790. Try go fo Dell or Sony Notebook. I sold my Sager and got a Sony A series laptop with XBrite Technology. Heat and fan noise is not as bad as Sager. You be surprise. Do some research.

I would much rather get an asus m6n if I were to return it. The main reason I got this sager is the wsxga screen which is outstanding... I love this resolution its just perfect.

My fan turns on about every 3 minutes btw... I dont know if it slows down later on but when its hot its about 3 minutes. I dont have every driver installed though maybe this could be the problem?

I have the 2.1 cpu, a gig of ram, 100gb hard drive and WUXGA screen. Having just traded up from a Dell, and having HP and Dell machines at work, this machine just isn't any louder unless I'm playing a high end game for a long time. Of course those machines won't play games at the same level, so I can't really compare. I've got a friend with a Dell XPS which is louder, and another friend has a Dell 8600 which is about the same loudness but tends to crash because of the heat.

I just came off of playing Guild Wars. The fan was on almost constantly during the game, but was not terribly loud. As soon as the game shut down, the fan turned off. I'll time it to see how long it takes to turn on again. In the interim I have a browser, email, and chat going. I'll post again when the fan comes on and let you know how long it took.

It came on again after 10 minutes. I probably wouldn't have heard it if I hadn't been paying attention though. It's definitely audible, but not loud enough to draw my attention away from other things.

Hrmm, maybe somethings wrong with my machine? Should I check my temps or something? It really goes off every 3 minutes or so.

Maybe it's the way that it is configured. While I don't have one, I believe that the CPU should cycle down to a slower speed based on usage. Speed step and poswer schemes may control this. Maybe some 3790 "folks" can guide you through these settings.

I hope this is the case. I have wcpu showing me that is running at 2ghz right now.

Just changed the power scheme to something that makes it run at 600mhz. I guess when i wanna play world of warcraft Im gonna have to manually change it.

It will automatically cycle up for you when you do anything intensive.

I do notice a bit of lag when I start something, but after a couple seconds it's up to speed just fine.

Right but it never cycles down for me

Is there a bios setting maybe I might have farked?

Everyone has a different perspective on what they consider loud... With that said, the only time my machine gets loud is when I doing something very intensive and the fans go to full blast.

The fans shouldn't be going crazy if you just surfing the web. If they are, check your system process and see if anything is using up a ton of cpu cycles. You may have a program, or spyware, that's causing these issues.
