If you look on the uniwill website the dimensions on width from 12.1in to 14.09. Thats an extra 2 inches. My laptop i ordered is now an inch wider & longer than my dads 15in powerbook. and i already find his notebook a little unweildly. ill see if thats enough reason to send it back.

my 258kao is roughly that size, it not bad by any means.

It is 14 and 1/8th inch wide. I guess you are right. I wondered why it seemed so big.

Can't get muich narower and still include a 15.4" widescreen.

Hmm, that is a bit disappointing. The whole reason I was leaning towards this, was it's smaller form factor. I can't say I'm totally suprised, being laptops with a 15.4 screen are usually atleast 14" wide.

I have only had the Del in my sig for a week, so I can't say right now if I will love/hate this size laptop in the future.

Well, Uniwill must have been lying in their previous assessment. A 15.4" widescreen is right about 13.1" wide, and being able to have a notebook that's less wide than its screen would truly be an impressive feat

I guess the smallest a 15.4" widescreen can be is about 14", since that has less than half an inch spare on either side. You could maybe cut that down to a quarter inch on either side, but I haven't really looked into how small they have tried to make 15.4" widescreen notebooks.

consider all that space under the LCD on the 259 where the speakers are. the speakers on the 258 are smaller yet there is just over an inch of dead plastic space under the screen, about 1/2" on the sides and roughly 3/4 on the top

Why does a change in spec require a conspiracy theory? Anyway, from the google-cache, it looks like the millimeter spec was correct...somebody converted mm->inches wrong on their website.

Ah, the eternal problem of unit conversion Whether it's crashing things into Mars or disappointing laptop buyers, it never fails to impress

The issue of dead space at the top and bottom won't change the width, though it will of course change the depth and thus the footprint size. But, as I said above, the laptops have to be more than 13.1" wide just to fit the screen. The dimensions of a 15.4" widescreen laptop is 13.1"x8.2" (more or less).

It's interesting that computer makers have even managed to make Europeans use inches for measuring screen sizes (and drive sizes, of course). When will people start using real units for these things?
