Please help this laptop noob pick an antivirus that doesn't slow system down

Thread Starter
Hello. I just ordered my 9860 and am waiting... waiting.... I'm confused by all the different info in trying to figure out if I go 6800 or x800, but who isn't. So, my question:
I need an antivirus for my new laptop. I like to play games like Halflife2, so I don't want it to slow my system down (in fact, I don't even want real-time scan). I've used Norton, and it has kept me clean, but adds all this crud that slows my computer down. So I want to try something else. By the way, I don't want a sucky antivirus that may not be a system hog but lets every virus come through; when I'm occasionally not playing games I work, so I need decent protection. Oh, I'm not going to weird sites and downloading much, if ever. I just play HL2, Starcraft, read the news, research, and do work stuff. Thanks all you knowledgable people.

@Forum Groupie :

To Get Cool Side Pictures (aka avatars)
1. Click "User CP" on top menu bar.
2. Click "Edit Avatar" on Control Panel on the left.
3. Either enter the URL of the site that contains the picture you desire, or upload a picture from your hard drive. Remember that it cannot be larger than 100x100 pixels or larger than 2.9KB.

To Get Cool Tags (in signature)
1. Click "User CP" on top menu bar.
2. Click "Edit Signature" on Control Panel on the left.
3. In the signature box, click where you would like to place the picture.
4. Click the "Insert Image" button (looks like a mountain).
5. Enter the URL of the site that contains the picture you wish to have.

As for your main question, I don't really know. I have, however, heard great things about McAfee VirusScan.

I used to use Panda Antivirus Titanium for about a year now. It was great ... fantastic! Although now i've switched to SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS.... not NORTON. they are different. This thing is sweet. Only runs on 2.3 megs of RaM and rarely any CPU Usage and all the benefits of norton. My current version is 9.0.1.100. Hope that helps!

Grisoft's AVG. Free and good.

Or ClamAV.

Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 is the best I've ever used. It uses very little resources and includes spyware protection, virus protection, pop up blocker firewall, email scan, webmailscan and anti spam. The updates are easy and extremly fast and I only payed $40 at NewEgg. It's the best money I ever spent on software bar none. I would've payed a lot more for it if i had to. I hate Norton with the passion it's a resource hog and that equates to slow performance.

Good luck!

I use Panda but the latest version of it is horrific. I think Panda 2004 is the best version there is. I think I might give Trend Micro a try. Norton has been slow since 2003 and I haven't bothered with McAffee since 2000 or so. I've also used AVG before but didn't like the interface (I'm picky) but as far as protecting your computer it worked just fine for being free.

I use Avast. Small file but works great. offers good protetion. I always used norton before but its a resource hog. Norton no more.

I prefer eTrust AV 7.1. There's quite a few recommendations to sort through

Free but you get what you pay for and I always get this feeling that I'm not completely protected Plus the an all in one Internet security packages you can get these days are less hassle and less programs running in background. Just my .02 though!

Trend PCcillin is unobtrusive and very highly rated. Doesn't slow the system down like Norton and catches everything nicely.

NOD32 - great

Hi,

Used to use Panda, but it had huge problems right before I switched (in Summer '04). Now I use NOD32. NO problems, and seems to run very smoothly. Also seems to catch a lot of web-type viruses that Panda never did.

I give NOD32 a "10".

You could try PC-cillin (free months trial). It seems to do a good job and has a lightweight feel to it. Panda Titanium is also fast but I got fed up with it deleting "dialers" which were actually valid parts of my system, and resulted in crashes at power-on!

I'm also curious to hear what people have to say.

Command antivirus

Cheap... Almost bi-weekly updates... Zero Virus infections for over two years since using this product. It is a very small program (less than 5 megs) and very fast. Not like norton and others that have over 100 megs of bloatware and slow your system down.

Seems like I get an auto update atleast once daily sometimes twice. I think Trend Micro checks really frequently. I've heard nothing but rave reviews on NOD32...not sure about Command Antivirus must be a smaller company. Someone should start a poll to see what everone prefers here...I just don't know how.

I'd go with Kaspersky. The big "K" has found things that Norton and Avast have missed, and it has updates hourly.
