Compaq's Deep Dark Secret

Thread Starter
Ok so late September, around there I bought a Compaq R3240ca

specs:

Athlon 64 3200+
512 DDR
60gb hd
DVDR/W 4x something around there 24x or something for regular cd's
GeForce 4 440 GO 64 MB (dedicated)
10/100, 802.11b/g
3 usb

price:

laptop: $2099
3 yrs extended warranty: $449.00

So a couple of months passed and I decide to get Thief 3 and try it out and found out due to the piece of crap video card that they provided.... though before I had bought this laptop I noticed it was a 64mb but couldn't find much better, I didn't notice that this piece of crap didn't support Pixel Shader....
So what does this mean, the video card with no pixel shader support really makes this would be beast a piece crap which can't run next to any games that require pixel shader's.... I say next to any games because as some of you might know there 3D Analyzer which tricks some games

so any of you would be Compaq R3000 series buyer who want to have a gaming laptop..... keep your money a bit longer... Buy a eMachine, they have ATI's. To my knowledge the ATI 9600 has pixel shader support and that was on the eMachine I was about to get

side note: I have contacted compaq about this issue.... they don't seem keen on trying to find a solution... instead they said sorry that its a hardware issue and didn't even offer to possibly contact if the issue is ever solved... I know that there little to no chance of actually doing anything to the hardware, but atleast show that your interested in trying to find a solution...
I even tried asking them if there was a chance they could do some software implimentation of it but they just seemed to ignore the idea and ignored the fact that I pointed out 3D Analyzer... going on to say it was imposible:S

since I didn't get to use any smilie's here's to you Compaq:P

In some ways it's the fault of the end user for not doing proper research on his laptop choice. It is well known that the 440 Go is definetely not a high end laptop card.

It's quite impossible for a graphics card so weak to be augmented by any software - you can't make a fatigued person run a mile stretch with some encouragement.

I don't blame them for not trying to find interest in the matter.

If you can, get a refund as soon as possible and buy a better computer, one with at least a Radeon 9700.

Oh, the best part of the post was telling us about how you tried to play Thief 3. At least you'll be able to play Thief 2 and 1... they're better than 3 anyways

Its pretty much your fault for not doing any research on the laptop's gpu. I dont see how this is compaq's dark secret. Also, this isnt a review, so the thread will be moved.

i will make sure such things dont ever happen to you in the future

Sorry dude, u should have checked. That is a 4 year old card. Good in its time, but it sucks now. Your best bet is to try to return it by pretending its broken and maybe complaining to somebody higher up in the company. Research your purchase next time. As a side note, I beleive one of the R3000 series has a r9600, correct?
By the way, don't start thniking that Nvidia is completely useless. They are usually competitive, but you can't expect their 4 year old offerings to compete with modern ATI solutions.

I have to agree with the other users, I'm afraid. It's your own fault for not researching.

THis is turning into a basing... but if that isn't your fault then I'll be damned. What were they keeping secret from you? That you were buying a crap video-card? It's right there on the freaking specs!

Can you say, "Dumb@$$?"

Noob o' the week, perhaps? Rates right up there w/ the guy that posted his computer for sale in Lawson's FS thread.

Altho' I'd have to say this one takes the cake because he spent $2k+ on something he had no idea about.

nvidea's mobile solutions are no longer competitive. they are too power hogging to be efficient
post #11 of 12
What would you say the 9800 and X800 are, battery savers? I don't know the exact power consumption specs, but I can imagine they are not that far above or belows NVidias high end offerings which is what most users here care about.
right.. and how has a 9800 or x800 in any laptop that runs on battery.....

obviously we're talking about the x300 and x600 lines that go with centrino laptops.

going by your logic if you ocmpare to pentium 4s then intel is also not power efficient since they're the "high end" offerings ..
