Jack just wanted to tell you that I'm proud you finally decided to build instead of buying a prefabricated machine. Ironically, once you get on this road, there is no turning back. Good job. (Pepsi of course).

And you let him build with a frickin' Prescott?? I was going to congratulate you too, but I see you still lead him in the wrong direction, regardless. But at least you have a space heater for the winter months too.

he was going to buy a prescott from alienware, the kid posted about 50 threads asking every question there is to know about PC's. he said he wasnt a big gamer, he said he wanted a P4 based system, so he put the parts together, and here he is now. the only thing i did was change his mind into building instead of buying, and i told him to get the antec sonata.

Not to state the obvious, but A64 is better. And you would have probably spent less in the long run. But still, glad to hear you are building your first, like someone else said, you'll always build now, never even consider AlienWare again. So I guess when I think about it, you still saved a lot of money. Congratz

A64 is not better in everything, in multitasking, the P4 sqweeks ahead slightly, in video encoding and editing, the P4 beats the A64 by a decent margin. besides, its not like there is a big difference in real world apps.

atleast he got his feet wet and know he is officially converted.

Astu and AMD don't miss the point here. Which is better is not the issue, whats important is that he did decide to take on this experience and learn. its not like this will be his only computer. Personally I'm just happy that another individual decided to take the plunge and build rather than be subjected to the exploitive and very monopolistic tendencies of mass producers. Perhaps if more people learn to do the same then such companies will understand to bring out better and more intelligently designed products.

i have been following a few of these build ur own pc threads recently. Very interesting. I am still a far way off as I unloaded a good chunk of change fior the 8890 i own, but this keeps me updated as to whats available.

Anyway, funny thing he hasnt posted yet. Wonder if he is experiencing problems and doesnt wanna come back here to ask for help thanks to maxwell's post

Ryan i hope everything is well because if the first experience is crap than you can only imagine the trauma that follows.
