Am I insane?

I cancelled my Alienware 7700 order today and bought a Dell Inspiron XPS. Yes, I'm well aware that the Alienware is the better notebook, but here were the reasons for my switch:

Dead pixel issues: I'm super anal retentive about this sort of thing, and I realize that Dell doesn't have a "better" policy on replacing lcd's, but after searching the forums, it appears as if fewer dell users have dead pixel issues, and if they do, they have an easier time returning and replacing the notebook.

Wait time: I'm leaving the country on Feb. 2nd and even though my expected date from Alienware to have the laptop built was Jan 20th, it wasn't even being built yet (I ordered it almost a month ago). I simply can't take the risk that it wouldn't be completed by the time that I leave.

Size and Weight: I realize that they both are big laptops, but from what I understand, the XPS is a few pounds lighter, and less bulky. I will be needing to carry mine around from time to time and so this was a factor for me.

Money: I ordered this through work and was able to use a discount, giving me about 6% off the final price. I'm saving about $350 by going with the Dell.

When it is all said and done, I just want a solid gaming laptop that will keep me happy for a couple of years. I have a lot of experience with Dell and have always found their customer service to be top notch. Sure, the Geforce Go6800 and Raid 0 are going to be missed from my Alienware, but I think the MR9800 will play everything that I will need it to play. Does it play HL2 very well?

Ah well, I phoned up a geek friend of mine after I made the change and after cursing for a few minutes, he said I was certifiably insane, then promptly hung up on me.

Whether you're insane depends on the machine you get... and how you react to it.

The XPS (MR9800 w/256 and 2Gigs ram)will play any game very well indeed well into 2006
HL2 flys on this notebook.

Hmm, I looked up the definition of insanity:

buying a mobile gaming rig with a desktop chipset two weeks before Sonoma/Alviso ships

I can run Doom III on high settings @ 1024 x 768 and get around 50 fps (256 Meg 9800 Pro, 1 Gig of Ram)

Man, I play on 1600x1200 on High and find it playable. D3 doesn't need the high FPS rate like other FPS like Q3.

Raid 0 has no place in regular desktop use. Good choice on the XPS

the alienware is overkill in my opinion since the raid does absolutely nothing for a regular programmer surfer gamer like me. i need some amount of mobility and hence alienware definitely wouldnt have been my first choice. sure it sounds cool and may even look better than the xps but man the xps wont leave you room for regret.

@Groove75 welcome in club, it's a good choice, hopefully the MR6800 is not the last gpu for this system, but with the mr6800 you are able to play all games now and in the next year.

Edit: ups, ... nice card I mean MR9800

Thanks for the replies. I'm feeling better about it now. Just out of curiosity, do any of you have dead pixels on your Inspiron?
I have 0 dead pixels, but other have had some, but with the huge res, it is hard to notice (which is a good thing).

http://notebookforums.com/search.php?searchid=741467

Have a look through them, but i havn't encounted many people that have any.

My LCD seems to be pretty good, i think. There is a slow red fade when going from colour to black, and a little light leakage, but unless it gets worse, its not going to bother me.

None here, this is the most amazing screen i have ever stared at (SEC3150). So clear, so sharp (well its not, its a Samsung).

Dude, the Alienware is not all that hot sh!t. Plus, if you got the 9800, the Dell performs much better than the current 15.4 Alienware offering. But yes, if they release a new pci-e based machine next week with an ATI X800 or go6800, it seems foolish to buy an XPS now.

Hmm, I wonder when the next Dell will be announced?
Nope... there was a thread about that a while ago, and I think the conclusion was "because dell gives a shit"

Gosh, I would have just ordered the sager 9860 from one of the sager retailers, with like overnight shipping
post #19 of 30
Yeah, you could have gotten a sager 9860 as well. Cheaper than the alienware but more power than the XPS.

Don't start kicking yourself yet. Wait a couple weeks for the i9300. Then start kicking yourself.
