Fixed my screen flicker... - Page 9

Almost one week now and still no flicker. Gosh, what's wrong?

Thanks again Compman
briefly looked though, but i didnt see this so i'll ask

has anyone with the best buy warrenty gone though them to try an get it fixed? I understand that they will probably just ship it to emachines, but if its a reoccuring problem, perhaps we could leverage a new machine out of them.

Sure enough, my machine has developed the flicker. I guess i am going to have to send it in sooner or later, just trying to figure out if its better to go though emachines or best buy

I remember seeing a post where a guy sent his m6805 in to BB for the second time and the third time he got an m6811 or something like that. Not sure how BB warranty works entirely. If you have the BB warranty I would use that so you can work your way to getting a newere machine.

If I remember correctly, someone ever posted that e-machines 68** is no longer DEVo at Best Buy, they will only repair & not replace - unless you have sent it in 3 times.

Well, the flicker is back. Gonna try crimping the wires that go to the motherboard... Compman, didn't you have to do this as well?
Yes.

Oh and BTW, you also have to glue the wire to the LCD plastic, otherwise it will work its way loose again.
Ok, thanks. Did you try this without the glue and it worked it's way loose? I really don't want to use the glue but if I must. How is the glue holding up for you? Should I use the kind of glue you need a gun and sticks?
Well, if you look at the way those terminals are designed, they will rock back and fourth everytime the LCD is moved, so therfore common sense tells me they will loosen up. I used hot glue for the very reason of warrenty repair. If your laptop needs service the hot glue can be taken off with moderate difficulty.

ok, so my screen flickers... am i risking further damage by not sending it in promptly? im going to send it though best buy sooner or later, but i really need it to get though the next month or so. but i dont want the damn thing to burn out on me.

I heard something at work today about someone in-house testing these machines with the flickering, and then they disabled PowerPlay and they stopped flickering.

How does one do this?

Also, could it be a problem with SP2? I was going to take mine in today, and I put in the origional HD, and its not flickering anymore. It has SP1 on it. Going to try and install SP2 just to see if it starts having problems again.

something else i noticed though, adjusing the brightness using the function key is crazy now, doesnt always work (on both sp1 and sp2)

There is a powerplay tab in the advanced display properties.

My flicker has gotten worse. Not so much the actual flicker, but it used to be that if I turned it down a notch from max brightness it'd stop flickering. Not anymore Two more weeks till I ship it off for repairs. I'll miss it!

Wow! Great thread. Good to hear that this issue is/has being isolated to a loose connection and not a faulty component. I hope that is still the verdict.

I purchased my eMachines M6811 in mid Feb, 2005 from FutureShop (owned by BestBuy). No problems until recently (about 2 weeks ago) I noticed the "brightness flicker". I do believe it has gotten worse as it occurs more frequently and flickering is more noticable. After a couple of minutes it stops but will sometimes start again. Odd behavior for a loose connection.

I live in Canada, so a RMA to eMachines will easily be 2-3 weeks. I'm anticipating expenses as we Canucks always get screwed RMA stuff to the States. I'm not looking forward to having to deal with @$%ing tech support via phone and going through multiple RMAs.

I might give this connection fix a try.

I am sure Compman would agree NOT to do this unless your warranty is up. You never know when you will actually need an RMA and you don't want to go around proding in your computer. If you mess something up then your warranty really will be up. It's better to use the RMA and get it fixed right the first time.

NOT.

Emachines fixing something right the first time? I have a better chance of getting struck by lighting than emachines fixing it the first time. In all seriousness, I now my personal limits on fixing things, but I cannot recommend it to someone who has never been inside a laptop. I will never RMA my laptops again because the hassle is not worth it to me. Unless it is a motherboard or LCD, I will always try to fix it myself.

Now I only know of one other person who used my fix, and that is mobile_hackbox. How is it holding up since you crimped both connectors?

Just thought I'd give an update...

Finals ended yesterday so my laptop is going back for repair again, warranty has one more month on it so I'll be performing CompMan's technique for repair after that, as I'm sure it will be required... I'll likely be fixing it in July/August when I repaint the whole unit, flicker or not.

FYI, Gateway has switched to using DHL for RMAs instead of FedUp... as a result, I won't be sending it out until tomorrow when I can be home all day for them to pick it up from me.

Well, I've never cracked open a laptop before. But I have modded several Xbox consoles. I wonder how this compares in difficulty.

Heh. Well with everything it's the first disassembly that's the bitch. Afterwards it's like riding a bike. Just be VERY careful with the ribbon cables that lead to things like the keyboard and the power-on-button panel.

BTW, the hot glue technique was ingenious. I can't believe I didn't even think about securing those wires like that! It really makes a lot of sense to hold those wires on place with the easy-to-work-with hot glue and I am very flickerless now.
