Fixed my screen flicker... - Page 10

alright, i posted a new topic on my screen dimming. I first thought that flickering was having the screen flicker on and off, or is it just dimming. Let me know if im part of the club.
Screen dimming is part of the problem as well. The inverter is not getting the full clean power becuase the wires are not making good contact.

Well, sent my laptop off on Friday, got it back yesterday (Tuesday) 3-hous later, guess what happened... That's right the flicker is back, Gateway has definitely not found this thread or an alternative solution. I'll probably do Compman's fix next week.
Thats why I will never send mine back unless it is a major problem like the motherboard or LCD module.
The hot glue trick works damn well. I'd suggest it if you aren't scared to open her up. Makes a lot of sense to keep that wire from wobbling.
Meh.... I'm still getting some occasional flicker even with the hot glue trick. Crazyness.
You have to crimp the wires on both connectors first, then glue it in place.

I just got this problem after a realy rough bus drive on a vaction trip and I isolated it to the connector of the inverter wire to the motherboard, When i press on the plastic connect down it stops flickering but the colors are still washed out. does that mean my inverter is bad now?

edit: found out its not the inverter wire. its ok if I press down on the metal cover that covers the cd drive it stops flickering but the colors are still washed out.

any ideas?

update: finaly fixed my laptop. somehow the lcd cable that connects to the screen at the top has gone slightly loose and after pulling off the masking tape and replugging the cord back in, no more screen scramble/flicker.

success

damn...I just went through the flicker fix procedure, and actually realize that my screen had lost like 4 levels of brightness since I bought it...the procedure restored this, and stabilized the image. I'm very impressed, and it wasn't very difficult to do (except for initially getting the wires out of the wire harness)
Did you do this to both connectors?
nah, just the one going into the invertor...kinda mangled the fingers a bit on the wire harness, and really didn't want to go through it with the other one...the only alteration I made to your directions was using super glue (i know, irreversible) instead of the hot glue...couldn't get hot glue to adhere properly. I'm a few months out of warranty, so this was pretty much an "all or nothing" fix for me. Wasn't really expecting it to work out as well as it did. Another thing, I tightened the 4 hinge screws, but does this really have any effect on how loosely the screen opens and closes? it seems to me that it may affect any sort of give in reference to the hinges, but not actually tighten the hinges themselves. If my screen is at a 45 degree angle or more relative to the keyboard, it'll fall open or closed the rest of the way....
If you tighten the 4 screws it will do nothing except prevent the LCD lid from cracking and remove the 1/4" play in the hinges.
so is there any way to actually prevent the screen from flopping around?? I suppose I could squirt some of that krazy glue into the hinge area and lock it at a 90 degree angle...heh

I just wanted to say thanks compman it worked great, no more flickering. I could deal with it while I am opening it but when it does it randomly when I am reading, coding, or doing graphics it was just too much. I work on computers at a computer repair shop daily and I must say hardware wise this is the most difficult thing I have done so far lol and you didn't mention the hooks on the bottom of the lcd frame(they gave me the most trouble). Other than that you were sufficiently detailed bout the process. A video clip would have been nice but with my luck I would record myself turning my expensive laptop into an expensive brick.

When it comes to difficulty to perform on a scale 1-10 I would give it an 8 but I have to admit I expected it to be a 4 so I was probably more disappointed that it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, so I might be a lil more harsh than I should be. And the frame trouble I had makes up 2 of em. I give your guide a 8.5 out 10 though(10 being best)

Also I only pinched the connecter on one end thus far, hopefully that is enough but we shall see.

...and loose hinges.

Add my 6807 to the list!

Thanks to Fizi, Compman and WereSHARK for posting pictures and for Compmans walk thru. All went smooth but for the clamp on the keyboard ribbon cable, too my old eyes this appeared as a socket not a pressure clamp. No laptop was harmed in the above procedures.

You guys saved me at least ten unnecessary screws and a few broken plastic tabs. I also had 4 loose screws under the top screen bezel. Good call with the Loc-tight tip on these hinge screws. The Arima hinges are the cheesiest of any laptop I’ve owned. My three year old HP z5000, Twinhead(?), are tight with no slop back and fourth.

Cheers!

you can always take the bash.org approach to flickering:

I was at page 2 yesterday reading this thread....then I stopped reading as I had no problems with flickering screen.

Today I have the dim barely readable screen...........http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=112835....
...and then compleated reading all the treads on another pc.

Now I find that it is a dangerous thread, as some others too had the screen issue after reading this thread.

I am still looking for a solutipn.

1. I will try the crimping technique tomorrow.....the notebook remains open on the operating table for tonight.

Too bad, I let emachines/gateway get me to buy it.......I was only looking at the performance that time....now it seems the quality is the most important. My compaq has no issues after 3 years of use and mostly it stays ON.

I am not recommending this brand to anyone from now on.

It would be nice to maintain a thread which updates a list with all the issues encountered with these machines, and then see if the issues were addressed or not by the manufacturer. This will probably help the customers in the long run.

My m6811 is flicker free as of last weekend, and as long as it stays that way you can disreguard all the negative bashing in my previous post. I will still bash their customer support though.

Lastly, I will admit this last fix, is not an easy one. You will hear yourself swearing words you never thought existed when you try to bend the little white tabs on the connector. But it's worth it not to have your eyes pop out of their sockets when using your laptop.
You, sir, are the man.

After my third RMA, bout three days after my warranty expired, I developed a chronic screen flicker. Now, about three months later, I followed your guide and it worked like a charm. Thank you.

Only problem is, now I feel less motivated to research and dive into an LCD upgrade to a LTN154U1 1920x1200 screen

i got a serious problem with my gateway 7426gx. When i was playing a game on it this morning, the screen suddenly started flickering, and everthing seemed distorted, with lines going in every direction. Then i quickly managed to exit. Then, my regular desktop was messed up, their were verticl lines on the screen, aroung the mouse, and all icons. Also some icons appeared as they were fading. Now no games work, and everything is messed up.

I have already restored my computer and uninstalled, and installed my video card driver which if a ATi mobility 9600/9700 series driver. I also lower DPI to 96 and my hardware accelaration is near lowest. This managed to get lines gone, but no games will work. They just get all distorted.

PLEASE I NEED HELP!!!!!
