Dell SpeedStep

Hi all,

Could someone please tell me how do I check my current cpu clock speed? I understand that Dell speedstep will make the CPU runs slower from time to time. However, when I go to System properties->General, it only shows the processor at 2 Ghz.

Thanks,
H.P.

It should show two speeds under "general". The second one is the current speed your at.

Nice, it works! Thank you!

Weird, I am using AC Power and it's still displayed as 600 mhz.

That's speedstep for you. The speed will raise when you need it.

Thank you for explaining

If you want to disable it... start/control panel/power options/ and then "always on" or just disable it in the bios. You can also use quickset if you have it.

There are so many options to choose there :O

I think I will keep the speedstep. It will keep the laptop cooler & save battery life ")

Download Speedswitch XP if you want immediate control over the CPU. You can turn it off when you don't need it if you want.

Thank you, gmnstrunr37. I'm using that program now.

I notice there's a small bug (?) with windows xp when displaying cpu speed. When I right click on my computer-> properties, the 2nd line always display 598 mhz as the CPU speed (first line 2 ghz). Even after I enabled "Always On" under power management (or by selecting max performance using speedswitchXP), windows still display 598 mhz all the time

Does anyone have the same problem or know a fix for this problem?

And btw, is it ok to leave both QuickSet & SpeedSwitchXP on at the same time?

Maybe do a reboot and it will then show the correct speed?

Your last question: yes, it's fine to leave them both running. I tend to leave SSXP off unless I want to switch my CPU clock faster. /shrugs Then again, QS I leave off, too, as it doesn't do very much.

Windows doesn't calculate the CPU clock very accurately... I forget why, but diefer does mention it in his SSXP manual somewhere.

Thanks for replying. Windows doesn't show the right cpu speed. Real-mode using speedswitchXP confirms the correct speed

I have speedswitchXP on my laptop before I had sp2 and it worked fine. Now that i have installed sp2 my cpu speed is always at max 3.06 GHz. I reinstalled speedswitch after sp2 and got the same result. SSXP is set in to real time speed calculations and the power settings is set to portable/laptop. but nothing seems to fix it. Please let me know if anyone knows why.

Just a minor thing..

SpeedStep is Intels baby.. it's one thing we can't blame Dell for.
