Hey all,

My problem is the system continuously overheats and reboots if I do anything besides play solitaire. Needless to say I'm fairly unhappy but I haven't lost hope yet. If I can get the heat problems fixed I think it will be a nice machine.

According to the bios it is the CPU fan that is spinning up (you read that right, it overheats while observing settings in the bios). According to the nerve endings in my hand it is definitely the PSU that is overheating. None of the temperature sensors in the bios indicate overheating (would the PSU have temp sensors?) and the only fan spinning up is the CPU fan. If I don't do anything but boot into Windows it doesn't seem to heat up. As soon as I start running any apps I can hear the fan speed up but if I stick to simple things like solitaire or a single browser window it seems to stabilize.

After some research I found that the monitor draws 90 watts and the power supply pulls 480. They both plug into the belkin UPS which produces 540 watts. I haven't had a chance to move the monitor to another outlet and only have the box plugged into the battery but I'm wondering if that might help. I don't really know much about electricity and current and so forth.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Replying to myself here.

Finally got into the Alienware support forums. Lo and behold the very first thread:

"Random PC shutdown with new Area 51 system w/PCI"

Seems like I wasn't the only one, there were a lot of posts from people with similar rigs to mine having identical problems.

From a tech support person a few days ago:

Quote:
Alienware has identified an issue where a small number of systems configured with a high end CPU (Intel or AMD), a performance video card (X800s, 6800GTs), and an Alienware Branded 480 Watt power supply have been spontaneously rebooting or exhibiting abnormal behavior while running intensive 3D games, programs, or benchmarks. The behavior consists typically of all system fans shutting off and the monitor going to Standby while the system’s power and keyboard/mouse LEDs remain. Some systems will shut down after a few minutes, other may take a few hours. Rebooting will return the system to its normal state.

Alienware has narrowed down the issue at hand to a small number of Alienware branded 480 Watt power supplies from our supplier.
Systems that are encountering the issue stop exhibiting the behavior when a new power supply is used.

If your system exhibits this abnormal behavior, please contact Alienware Technical Support for instructions on how to obtain a replacement power supply.
So I will call soon and hopefully my new psu will be on the way quickly and I'll be a happy camper again.
