Opinions needed will Sonama or Pen M get X800

I'm looking for opinions on this topic and haven't see much speculation regarding the graphics makeup of the new slated Sonama. I'm on the virge of buying a laptop but with all the releases due it's hard to pick knowing what's around the bend. I'm not expecting leaps and bounds but newer technology advancments would surely give me a piece of mind and hold me over for the next 3 yrs.

I don't see an x800 coming to the "normal" (from 4-8 lbs, 15 or 15.4") lappies soon.

However, I hear Nvidia is making some gfx boards for smaller laptops soon...

Probably not. The x800 and 6800 cards use lots of battery and produce loads of heat. They'd just about axe every Pentium M advantage.

So were stuck with the X600 and 9700? I've heard of a X700 I just can't remember the thread or website. Besides upgradabilty of the Pci-e what benifits are there with this coming platform? No wait, I forgot about the faster FSB but I'd think they'd have a better video card than the X600.

Eh? ATI has a Mobility X800. I haven't seen any reviews on heat or performance, though.

So the new Sonoma laptops, with their PCI-e bus, will easily be able to run one of these. Dunno what it'll do to batery life. We'll see.

I think we'll see the X800. ATI and comp makers have seen the market for DTRs, and heavy ones at that. I could imagine them releasing an 8 lb or so beefed up centrino with bigger battery and cooling facilities. And, thats really not all that heavy. Eventually we might see thin and lights like the ferrari wth crappy bat life, but small size.

the one with the x700 was eurocom i think...

maybe x700 is the same as the PCI-E desktop x700??

doh! as for x800, the sager 7620 has it which pctorque is reviewing.

I'm hearing lots of sonoma news now... maybe its coming out soon (tomorrow hopefully)

Oh man come on Jan 19 I've waited this long but man 1 more week...argggh!!! I'm growing so impatient this article really grabbed my attention.

at yahoo news:

" However, the new frontside bus and larger on-chip cache will give graphics performance a big boost with the new systems, he says. "You're going to start seeing a physical difference between a notebook that was released a year ago and notebooks that are released on the Sonoma platform."

Makes my mouth water

notably your sig carries your memory timings. i think the 533 bus will help the processor a bit, but i'm skeptical about the ddr2 memory. it'll all depend on latency of the memory that gets stuck in these lappies. the 533ddr2 intro reminds me of the P4 intro (1.4Ghz vs. their last generation of 1Ghz P3s). i.e.-we have to release it this fast bc the initial performance is essentially where we left off w/ the old technology. :\ LOL, and ironically as i think about it, here we are w/ the latest, greatest, revision of the revisited P3 architecture.

here's a good chart showing the timing latency issues. let's hope we get the 3-3-3 stuff!

If Corsair releases a low-latency DDR2 for lappys that would be great!

With Corsair it's not if but when.

from http://www.informationweek.com/story...cleID=57300632

"The Sonoma chipset, which will be marketed under the Centrino brand name, already is set to power 150 models of laptops, 80 of which are expected to be introduced by computer makers in January or February."

To answer your question simply, Yes it will. Although I'm unaware of a specific sonoma notebook (sonoma launches on the 19th) configured for the X800 mobility, I know of at least one sonoma/pentium M notebook with a DTR class video card. Search google for the Dell inspiron 9300, It'll be a sonoma class DTR with (at least) a nVidia 6800 GO. At around 9 lbs and 1.5 inches thick, it's a pretty slick, powerful notebook.

I bet we'll see at least a few pentium M DTRs in the coming months.
