9860 1 or 2 GiGs of memory?

For fans of Multimedia and Gamers, do you really see a difference between 1 Gig and 2 Gigs of memory? If so, during what do you see the difference in speed, etc?

there´s really no difference in gaming and multimedia. i´m an audio engineer, 2 gigs are nonsense... wheter you´re a gamer or a multimedia-freak.

Games wise there's no difference, multimedia wise - well it depends what multimedia you're talking about, manipulating LOTS of very large image files or 3D rendering/animation where very large textures are involved can cause a 1Gb machine to chug/hang when the physical memory is exceeded. With moderate sized images and textures 1GB can be plenty provided you don't go opening HEAPS of projects/elements at once. It just depends how many images are being loaded into memory, how large they are and how the application you're using manipulates them (some programs are more efficient/smarter than others). For audio work once again it depends how many effects/samples you're loading at once and how they're being manipulated but I doubt that you'd need more than 1GB for this kind of work.

I think it depends on what your doing and what your playing. Im playing EQ2 which has a huge memory leak so 2 gigs in this case will prolong me having to restart the game.. I plan to test it with no page file soon as I put two gigs in..forcing it to use all physical memory before crashing heh.. game play should be even smoother up to that point.. I wouldn't say 2 gigs is worthless..many games say it requires 512 to run and they are complete liars unless you like chugging with no eye candy..

Oh your dating yourself now Smeggy
Bad part is I remember that.. I remember going from 4mb to 8mb and thought that was all i'd ever need heh

Heh, makes me wonder how I ever got anything done with my 4kb Ram and tape drive in the day LOL

Heh I also remember upgrading to a 14.4 modem and how super fast that was compared to my 9600 modem.. How Prodigy(like aol back in the day) only took 5 minutes instead of 10 minutes to load heh..

these young whipper-snappers don't know how lucky they are. when I were a lad we had to do our computing on a abacus, 28 hours a day in't middle o't road while our dad beat us to a pulp with a cricket bat... kids today!

Ha ha, I remember when they came out with the first abacus. Man did that ever make things easier. We used to calculate by chiseling dashes in stone. Of course, either way it came out it always ended up with a club to the head.

After what Synergi said I've done a bit more research and I have to agree -some recent game titles can make use of more than 1GB of memory (eg. HL2, Doom 3) although there is much debate still about which actually runs faster, some believe that memory timings cause 4x512MB modules to perform slower than 2x512MB, some say that 2x1GB modules is better - although memory timings/performance can still be lower even for 1GB modules depending on the manufacturers spec. Whatever the case I think we'll definitely be seeing the release of more games over the next 12-18months that can and will make use of more than 1GB of memory and probably will ultimately perform better if you have that much installed.

Simple fact is, you can never have too much ram or HDD space, there will always be some game/app company who'll come along and use it all up for you.

Like my mom used to tell me..."It's better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it".

i have 2 gigs.i must say it makes life easier no matter what you try to do with it.everything loads faster.images are quicker to upload, files and multittudes of open folders are quicker to appear on 1 click of the mouse without any lag or hangups. plus i am pretty sure my copy of hl2 wouldnot run as smoothly without the 2gigs of ram. also, note that if youre using a amd64 your databus is twice of that of a p4 in some situations, not all.so amd64 looks at a couple of advantages in accessing data.i own a p43.8ghz wich should hold me over fine until 2007 when i deck out another order.i have no complaints.i agree with andre expect 2005 to see some changes in minimal requirements of ram for software

For a guy that doesnt think we need that much memory, he sure does crank out the bloatware doesnt he?
