all:

ordered my hitachi 7200 rpm drive today. i have done plenty of fresh installs of windows before, but i am assuming what comes with this 7405gx are restore disks and not just windows home for me to start with fresh.

so, i assume i pop in the new drive, make the bios check the cd drive while booting (my guess is it does already) and then let the restore cd do it's work. is that it? i will have my lappy back as i bought it but with a nice fast 7200 rpm drive???

thanks!

i think the answer is yes, ny restore dvd will do all the work. i have avoided installing any programs besides office, which i can reinstall, so i won't need to norton ghost my machine. i will have to download all the win updates again, but no biggie.

thanks again for any insight!

Yep, it is that simple. Just the pain of having to wait for it to finish will kill you.

The restore dvd will bring it back to "out of the box".

I wonder if it's possible to slipstream the DVD with Service Pack 2 for XP. Hmmm. I did it with my desktop's CD. Might be worth a try.... then you can just do a repair install of XP... perhaps.

The 7405gx has sp2 already in the restore cd. The emachines do not. It may be worth a try.

one last ?

i saw the restore cds in there, but are they empty? do i have to create the backup cds before i put in the new hard drive?

Im not quite sure I understand your question.

Check and see if the discs are blank. I think most people getting the gateway's have been getting blank restore discs to create their own restore from.

The 7405gx comes with one DVD with all applications on it. It is unlawful to not provide the owner with an operation system restore partition or disk they are paying for. If they say "preloaded" then that is a whole new deal.

But just to confirm the 7405gx does come with one dvd. I already used mine.

Is that restore disc smart enough to resize the hd image larger?

Since there isn't a secondary partition (unlike what HP, Compaq, & Sony do with their restore partitions), it should just format the drive as one volume/partition, regardless fo size.

That is correct, if will format first and then extract the files. I had no errors when restoring it with my 60GB 7K60.

great. i read that the 7422 came with a blank dvd and the restore disks had to be created first.

unfortunately, my hard drive won't come until monday.

so i won't get to play with it this weekend........

The 7405 actually has the drivers in a seperate folder, so you can extract them as needed to update existing drivers. COmpared to most restore discs, which archive everything into compressed folders, that's a very nice feature to have. Does anyone who has to create the restore discs themselves noticed if the drivers are housed in a seperate folder or not?
