Asus - warranty is strict?

I'm thinking of getting an Asus M6[b]Ne, mainly because it's a pretty nice-looking notebook and it's one of few that I've actually held in my hands and used - and I liked it.

My only concern is the warranty. According to Asus' website, you can't even install RAM without voiding the warranty, let alone the hard drive, optical drive, and CPU. This is dumb - Asus must think all of their customer's are retarded (or maybe just this potential one for misreading the warranty? )

Anyone have anything to say about this?

i think when they say 'you cant even install RAM without voiding the warranty"...they mean that the RAM/CPU/Optical drive/etc must be fitted by a registered Asus specialist inorder to not void warranty..

I'm aware of that, thank-you.

...It's extremely dumb and it turns me off of Asus completely unless there is some way to get them to allow you to make these changes?

Nope. Many manufacturer's are still on that "void warranty" sticker type if you do anything you void the warranty approach...they don't think their customers are dumb...they are just avoiding potential huge financial losses due to people screwing up their notebooks and bitching to customer service to get a new one...

They just about have to. I know of many other manufacturers that will not void the warranty for a simple RAM or HDD upgrade.

Sigh...yet another case of a "two-teir" system is needed: a "noob" warranty, and an "experienced user" warranty.

I know Chembook has a re-badged version of this notebook...might Chembook have a different warranty policy? Or would they just forward me to Asus?

On most warranties the only thing that is not warrantied if you do a switch is the new piece you put in.

Right, that is how it goes. Myself I'm gonna upgrade everything I can without taking off stickers (so everything except CPU (for now at least)) and keep the original parts to put back in in case I gotta call on the warranty. It would be nice to sell these but it's just as good to lend you RAM to your parents to use in their laptop, get an enclosure for the old HD and have external storage, etc...

Ah! Well, if that's the case, I would completely understand it.
