Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer

Welll the drive writes the DL media without problem. I copyied "The Grudge" minus a couple of languages (forgot to reset all the options). Anyway the file was 7,212,281,856 Bytes in length. This equated to 3,521,622 Sectors with 1,764,922 Sectors on layer one and the remainder on layer two.

Burn time was 37 minutes and 12 seconds. Of this time about one minute is need to finalize the disc. The write speed was a very stable 2.5x, as reported by DVD DeCrypter, excpet for the few seconds that the layer change was taking place (50% completed).

I tried playing the burned disk on my el-cheapo ($25) jWIN DVD player and it did not like the media. Lots of skips, stuters, and jump aheads (etc). I then tried it in my newer Sony player and all was well. It also reads well in the NEC 6500A and Pioneer DV-108.

Media type is: MKM-001-00.

So, there you have it - it does write and read dual layer DVD media (At least Verbatim works).

Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R

Starts at 2.1x, switches to 4.1x at 600MB, switches to 6.2x at 2.1 GB, and finally switches to 8.3x at 4.2GB.

Total burn time: 13:51

Taiyo Yedun 8x DVD+R

Media code: YUDEN000-T02-00

Starts at 3.4x and ends at 8.0x (at about 98% complete)

This is the first media to exhibit CAV/PCAV write technology. By this, I mean that the speed gradually increases as the write head becomes more and more distant from the center of the media. Very smooth operation and even though the 8x speed was only attained for 2% of the write the write time was the best for all media tested.

Total burn time: 10:52

More to Come...... Have additional Media On Order

OK,

Later this week (hopefully) or early next week, I should have the following media that I will be testing.

Prodisc 8x DVD-R
Prodisc 8x DVD+R
Piodata 8x DVD-R
Ritek Ridata DL DVD+R
Ridata 4x DVD+RW
OptoDisk 8x DVD+R

I may test additional media in the future; however, I will not buy any more just to accomplish testing for this initative. Everything that I have tested for the NEC-6500A, I have also tested on my external Pioneer DVR-108. So far, the only problematic media that I have tested are the Sonic 1x-4x. At times, these produce errors when they are verified and my jWIN DVD player just hates them and stutters and sputters whenever I try to play them.

I'll post the results of the tests after they have been accomplished.

I should have the RITEK 2.4x DVD+RDL and the 4x DVD-RW results in a few hours. I need to make an ISO of "Lord Of The Rings - The Return Of The Kings" DVD to use for the test. It's about 8.2GB with everything on the original Disc 1.

WTF - Ritek DL Media Works

Media Code: RITEK D01 01

Starts at 2.5x and continues until the end of the file.

Total burn time was 43:16

File was 8,519,063,522 bytes in length. This is 4,159,659 Sectors.

The destination media reports using 4,173,824 Sectores with L0 Zone having a 2,082,288 Sector Capacity.

Again, my el-cheapo jWIN DVD Player experiences some problems with this media. Not as much as it did with the Verbatim, but it still stutters and stammers a bit.

OK, I have selected the "Play Movie" and it appears as if the stuttering and stammering have disappeared. Skipping forward throught the many chapters, I so see a small hesitation at the point that the layers switch - just a small stutter.

I opened and closed the player and this time only experienced one stutter on the title page.

Conclusion - It works and at least for me works better than the Verbatim on the el-cheapo iWIN player.

Have no more media to test and will not buy anymore for this initiative. I think that what has been provided will allow one to conclude that this is a good drive (A KEEPER) that works well with a variety of media. If I happen to come accorss any other media (for free), I will update this after that event has happened.

Also, please note that these tests, for the most part were conducted with firmware revision 2.23.

Thanks G-Omaha,
I for one made my decision to purchase the NEC drive due to your extensive time, money, and effort.

Sorry for my laziness (I'm sure it's been discussed) but what software do you use/recommend for DVD copy/backup?

Now, if it would only arrive on my doorstep.....

Thanks again

I recommend DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor for those personal backups of copywrited material. Sometimes DVD Shrink just can't "decode" the material; however have not found that to be the case for DVD Decryptor (Might have to go to their site for some "binaries" to accomplish the real "tough ones").

If you "cut" ISO's from DVD Shrink, then DVD Decryptor (IMHO) is best for transfering the image to DVD.

You can use NERO, if you don't want to create an ISO file.

For those "difficult" decodes where you need to use DVD Decryptor, use it first then use DVD Shrink.

As always, if you find these to be useful; a (up to you what amount) contribution would be appreciated by the authors.

Oh, BTW, I too am lazy - it's just that I needed to do this anyway and thought it would be nice to share my experiences/frustrations with all on these forums.

Edit: My comments are more directed towards Video rather than data DVD copies.

OptoDisk DVD-R 16x

Stay away from this media. It simply does not work on the NEC 6500A drive and only works on the Pioneer DVR-108 w/firmware 1.18 at 4x speeds.

Prodisc DVD-R 8x Silver InkJet Printable - ODD

Media Type: PRODISCF01

Starts at 2.1x, at 600MB increases to 4.1, at 2.1GB increases to 6.2x and remains at that speed until the end of the media.

Total Time: 14:18.

Write just fine. Plays on all players EXCEPT the NEC 6500A. The Media type, after it has been written (wither by the NEC or other burners) is recognized as a DVD-RW and the disk is "EMPTY". On my Pioneer, all is well. Very odd.

Edit: The abnormal DVD-RW and "empty" condition only happens on a this (I think that the Media ID/Type is hosed) recorded media on the NEC 6500A. The Media actually is OK for playing on anything else that I have tried. JWIN, PIONEER, SONY, and TOSHIBA.. Don't know why this happens - but a heads up to you if you experience a similiar problem, the recorded media is OK - just play it on another device.

BENQ White Inkjet Hub Printable DVD+R 8x

Media Type: DAXON AZ2 00

Starts at 2.5x, at 590MB increases to 4.1 and remains at that speed until the end of the media.

Total Time: 15:15.

Even though this is slow - the media appears to be of excellent quality.

Also it is cheap - $25 per 100 and the printing surface is the closest to the hub that I have yet seen.
